New Spider-Man will be 'much younger' than Andrew Garfield, say reports

The next actor to play Spider-Man will be considerably younger than Andrew Garfield, according to reports.

The Amazing Spider-Man star Garfield has yet to step down officially, but following this week's deal between Sony Pictures and Marvel, which will see Spider-Man appear in a Marvel movie for the first time, it is widely presumed that the franchise will be rebooted in time for its next instalment, which is set for release on July 28, 2017.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is now looking for a new franchise star who is "much younger" than 31-year-old Garfield. Meanwhile, Variety reports that the next film will bring Spider-Man back to Midtown High School, a location familiar from both the original Marvel comic books and the earlier Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire.

Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien and Percy Jackson star Logan Lerman are said to have been mooted as potential replacements for Garfield, though neither actor has been approached yet. Meanwhile, Sony is also believed to be considering whether to focus its new Spider-Man film on a character other than Peter Parker. Comic book character Miles Morales, whose father is African American and mother is Puerto Rican, could possibly suit up as Spider-Man for the reboot, according to reports.

Sony successfully rebooted its Spider-Man franchise with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man starring Garfield and Emma Stone. However, last year's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was less well-received, fuelling longstanding rumours that Sony and Marvel might agree to collaborate on the webslinger's big screen appearances in the future.
