Brian May denies that Sacha Baron Cohen will play Freddie Mercury in Queen biopic

Sacha Baron Cohen will not portray Freddie Mercury in a new biopic film, says Queen guitarist Brian May.

The project has been in development for the past six years and was recently put on hold due to alleged arguments between Baron Cohen and surviving Queen members May and Roger Taylor about the tone and approach of the film, culminating in Baron Cohen leaving the project two years ago.

Yesterday, it was reported that Queen's manager Jim Beach confirmed the “important breakthrough” of Baron Cohen's renewed involvement after he received the Peter Grant accolade for Outstanding Achievement at the Artist and Manager Awards in London last week. However, now May has taken to his official website to confirm that this was a "joke".

May writes: "[There was] a small joke that Jim threw in during his acceptance speech. He said that, in response to [inquiries] about the progress on the Freddie feature film, that Sacha Baron Cohen had been re-engaged to write, produce, and direct the film, as well as starring in all four major roles! I’m afraid some folks might have taken it seriously!"

May had previously denied that Baron Cohen left the project on bad terms at the time, telling Classic Rock, "It's quite difficult to talk about because we owe Sacha a lot. He had so much enthusiasm for the project and it really helped us kick it into the start position. But in the end we felt that his presence in the movie would be very distracting.”

Other names rumoured to have replaced Baron Cohen in the lead role include Skyfall actor Ben Whishaw and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, the latter quickly denying rumours, saying: "I am completely wrong for that part!"

The film doesn't appear to have a schedule or potential release date.

Sacha Baron Cohen To Play Freddie Mercury On Screen

The stalled Queen biopic that was set to feature Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead role is back in action with the Borat and Ali G creator due to write, direct and star as the legendary frontman in the movie. The project, which has been in development for the past six years has been off and on due to alleged arguments between Baron Cohen and surviving Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor about the tone and approach, culminating in Baron Cohen leaving the project two years ago.

As reported in Metro, Queen's manager Jim Beach confirmed the “important breakthrough” of Baron Cohen's renewed involvement after he received the Peter Grant accolade for Outstanding Achievement at the Artist and Manager Awards in London last week.

Baron Cohen has been set to star as Mercury since the film was announced in September 2010 but pulled out two summers ago, reportedlybecause he and the surviving Queen members were unable to agree on the type of movie they wanted to make. Queen drummer Roger Taylor said: "We felt Sacha probably wasn't right in the end. We didn't want it to be a joke. We want people to be moved."

May denied Baron Cohen left the project on bad terms at the time, telling Classic Rock, "It's quite difficult to talk about because we owe Sacha a lot. He had so much enthusiasm for the project and it really helped us kick it into the start position. But in the end we felt that his presence in the movie would be very distracting.”

Previous names rumoured to have replaced Baron Cohen in the lead role were Skyfall actor Ben Whishaw and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe who quickly denied rumours, saying: "I am completely wrong for that part!"

The film doesn't appear to have a schedule or potential release date yet but will likely be the next project Cohen works on after current film Grimsby is complete. Baron Cohen is still filming the controversial new movie, which has come under criticism for its portrayal of the Lincolnshire town of the same name.

Creator Chris Carter on 'The X-Files' revival: 'It'll be honest to the characters'

The X-Files creator Chris Carter has spoken about the show's eagerly-anticipated revival.

Fox announced on Tuesday (March 24) that it is bringing back the cult sci-fi show for a six-episode "event series". David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their iconic roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, with Carter returning as executive producer. Shooting is due to start this summer (2015) but further details about the event series have yet to be announced.

"It'll be honest to the characters, and what happened to them since the series ended and the second movie," Carter promised in an interview with The Daily Beast.

Continuing, Carter revealed that the event series has "no scripts yet" but he and the creative team have a "clear idea" of what they want to achieve. "I know what I want to do, how I want it to lay out - the balance of mythology to stand-alone episodes," he explained. "Even though none of us have had contracts, I've only had one since yesterday, the people that are going to be involved have been talking since the beginning of the year, so we have a clear idea of how this should be, or the best way we think this should be laid out."

The cult sci-fi show originally aired on Fox for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002 and also spawned a pair of spin-off films, released in 1998 and 2008. Fox first revealed in January that it was having "conversations" about reviving the much-loved series.

Asked whether the event series could lead to a third X-Files spin-off film, Carter replied: "I think… First things first, we just want to do six great episodes. We're all primed to do that, there are great stories to tell, and now it's just distilling it down to telling the best stories possible in the time we have."

'Downton Abbey': ITV confirms upcoming sixth series will be the last

ITV has confirmed that Downton Abbey's forthcoming sixth series will be its last.

In a press statement released this afternoon (March 26), the show's executive producer Gareth Neame explained that its creative team "wanted to close the doors of Downton Abbey when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans".

"We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up," Neame added.

Created by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey debuted on ITV in 2010 and has gone on to become a global smash. The series, which now airs in 250 territories worldwide, has won 11 Primetime Emmy Awards from a total of 51 nominations, making it the most nominated British show in Emmy history. It has also collected numerous BAFTA, NTA and Golden Globe prizes for its five series to date.

Fellowes said today: "The Downton journey has been amazing for everyone aboard. People ask if we knew what was going to happen when we started to make the first series and the answer is that, of course we had no idea. Exactly why the series had such an impact and reached so many people around the world, all nationalities, all ages, all types, I cannot begin to explain. But I do know how grateful we are to have been allowed this unique experience."

The sixth and final series of Downton Abbey is expected to air on ITV later this year (2015). It will consist of eight episodes and a Christmas Special.

'Batman v Superman': First picture of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor revealed

The first picture of Jesse Eisenberg as the villainous Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice has been released.

Eisenberg, star of The Social Network and Now You See Me, is the third actor to play Superman's archenemy on the big screen following Gene Hackman, who portrayed Luthor in three films between 1978 and 1987, and Kevin Spacey, who depicted the bald baddie in 2006's Superman Returns.

"I don't know the history as well as the people making the movie," Eisenberg said shortly after landing the iconic role last year (2014)."So I guess it's up to them to figure out how much they want to separate it from previous incarnations. But I will treat it like it's its own role."

"There's no way to play the history of the character played by other people, unless you do some kind of wink, but that doesn't seem like a responsible way to act," he added. "So I will just do it as though it's a character."

The first picture of Eisenberg's Luthor was shared in a tweet by Entertainment Weekly earlier this afternoon (March 25).

However, Abrams will still serve as one of the film's producers.

Star Trek 3 is due to start shooting in June. The sequel has no official release date or title yet but is expected to be released in July 2016 to coincide with the sci-fi franchise's 50th anniversary.

Bruce Campbell to Play Ronald Reagan in Fargo Season 2

Bruce2Fans of Bruce Campbell will no longer chant hail to the king, baby but rather “hail to the chief” as the big-chinned one is all lined up to portray Ronald Reagan on Season 2 of FX’s “Fargo,” which TVLine reports will be a one-episode appearance.

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf stated that Season 2 takes place in the late-’70s while the Gipper was on his first campaign for President, during which he “makes a swing through Fargo. Some of the characters have some interactions with him. And some of his movies are also a part of the show.”

This will be a homecoming of sorts for self-proclaimed B-movie titan Campbell, who had a bit role as an actor in a soap opera which Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare watch in the original 1996 classic Fargo. Campbell also had cameos in the Coen Brothers’ Intolerable Cruelty (also on a soap), The Ladykillers and a supporting part in The Hudsucker Proxy. Most famous for his role as wisecracking hero Ash in the Evil Dead movies, the actor will reprise that role for television in Starz’s forthcoming 10-episode series “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”

The second season of “Fargo” will revolve around a previously-referenced incident that occurred in 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota involving a young Lou Solverson (Patrick Wilson). Also featured in leading roles are Ted Danson, Jean Smart, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons, along with recurring roles for Nick Offerman, Brad Garrett, Kieran Culkin, Bokeem Woodbine, Cristin Milioti and Campbell’s “Burn Notice” castmate Jeffrey Donovan.

Production on “Fargo” is currently underway in Calgary, and the 10-episode anthology miniseries is slated to premiere next fall on FX.

Emmy Award-winning Executive Producers Noah Hawley (showrunner/writer), Joel & Ethan Coen, Warren Littlefield and John Cameron all return for the second installment. “Fargo” is produced by MGM Television and FX Productions.

Hannibal’s Nick Antosca to Script Friday the 13th Reboot

Friday the 13th Reboot

Although it’s still not exactly clear what form the next big screen Friday the 13th entry will take (be it sequel, prequel, remake or otherwise), The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the upcoming franchise entry has scored a new screenwriter in “Hannibal” co-producer Nick Antosca. Antosca’s credits also include the series “Last Resort” and “Believe.” Antosca will rewrite the current draft of the film, previously scripted by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, which is on track for a May 13, 2016 release. That date, by the way, is the only Friday the 13th in 2016 and the last summertime Friday the 13th until 2018.

One of the more popular entries in the slasher genre, the first Friday the 13th was released in 1980 and followed a series of brutal murders of teen counselors at Camp Crystal Lake. The killer was ultimately revealed to be Pamela Voorhees, a mother whose son, Jason, drowned in the lake years earlier due to the negligence of the camp’s staff. As the cinematic series progressed, Jason himself became the franchise’s iconic hockey masking wearing, machete wielding killer.

The Friday the 13th franchise currently consists of ten original “solo” films, the 2003 crossover Freddy vs. Jason, and, most recently, the 2009 reboot. There was also a short-lived television series that, despite its title, was unconnected to the plot of the film franchise.

Set to be directed by V/H/S helmer David Bruckner, the new Friday the 13th is rumored to incorporate some level of “found footage” into its plot and the trade also alleges that the storyline will provide some kind of origin story for Jason Voorhees’ supernatural abilities.

Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing the new film through their Platinum Dunes, which also produced the 2009 film.

Confirmed: 'The X-Files' to return for six-episode 'event series'

The X-Files is to return for a six-episode "event series", Fox has announced today (March 24).

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their iconic roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, while The X-Files' creator Chris Carter will return as executive producer. Shooting is due to start this summer (2015) but further details about the event series have yet to be announced.

"I think of it as a 13-year commercial break," Carter said in a Fox press release. "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."

Fox's chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman said in the statement: "We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files - one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers - and we couldn't be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again. "Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files," Walden and Newman added. "And we're ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they've been waiting for."

Bradley Cooper to direct and star in 'A Star Is Born' remake with Beyoncé wanted as co-star

Bradley Cooper is set to make his directorial debut with the long-planned remake of A Star Is Born.

According to Deadline, the American Sniper star is "negotiating" a deal with Warner Bros. to direct, produce and star in the film, which he was first linked to as an actor in 2012 when Clint Eastwood was attached to direct.

Beyoncé, who was also attached to star in the film at one point but later dropped out, is said to be first choice to play its female lead, though she has yet to be "re-approached formally". The classic movie musical follows a rising star who falls in love with an ageing rocker, only to watch her career take off as his goes into decline. The role of the ambitious female singer has previously been played on screen by Janet Gaynor in 1937, Judy Garland in 1954 and Barbra Streisand in 1976.

The remake has a script by Will Fetters, whose previous screenwriting credits include Remember Me and The Lucky One. Back in March 2012, Fetters revealed that he has based the ageing rocker character on the late Kurt Cobain.

He explained: "I approached A Star Is Born [imagining] if Kurt Cobain never got to go unplugged and survived and it's 20 years later and it's now, and he wanted to try to do that album with that understanding as this grunge icon. That'd be tough to get done if he was past his prime, no longer selling, how does he get that album?"

'Boardwalk Empire' actor Jack Huston cast as lead in 'The Crow' remake

Boardwalk Empire actor Jack Huston has been cast as the lead in the long-planned remake of The Crow.

James O'Barr, creator of the original The Crow comic book series, said earlier this month (March) that Huston had "definitely been cast" in the remake and now Deadline reports that the actor has closed his deal to star. Shooting is due to start later this year.

Huston replaces Luke Evans, who landed the lead role of Eric Draven in May 2013, but dropped out in January of this year (2015) after becoming frustrated by the project's slow progress. In December the film hired a new director, up-and-coming Brit Corin Hardy, after Spanish filmmaker F Javier Gutierrez became unavailable to helm the remake. O'Barr will serve as a consultant on the new movie and Edward R. Pressman, one of the producers of the original film, will return to co-produce the remake.

The original 1994 film The Crow starred Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, a murdered rock star who is brought back to life by a supernatural bird – "the crow" – so that he can avenge his own murder and that of his fiancée. The film was based on O'Barr's acclaimed 1989 comic book series of the same name.

Lee was tragically killed during an accidental shooting on the film's set, but The Crow went on to become a hit at the box office and spawned three sequels without him, the most recent coming in 2005. A remake has been in the works since 2011, with Bradley Cooper and James McAvoy both linked to the role of Eric Draven before Evans, and now Huston, landed the part.

Taking to Twitter on Monday (March 16), the rapper made it clear that the film is completely unauthorised and features no input from his label OVO Sound.

The Drake Homecoming film is not something OVO or Drake have any part in. I feel it is my responsibility to inform and protect my fans.

Straight Outta Compton’s Jonathan Herman to Pen Scarface Remake

Scarface Al Pacino

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has set Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman to perform a script rewrite on its upcoming reboot of Scarface, to be helmed by Chilean director Pablo Larrain (No). Herman will fine-tune the screenplay that was already written by Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco) and David Ayer (Suicide Squad).

Originally directed for the screen by Howard Hawks in 1932, the story of a gangster’s rise to power was based on the 1929 Armitage Trail novel of the same name. In 1983, Brian De Palma offered a modernized update of the story with Al Pacino in the lead, which is the version best known today.

Now, producers Martin Bregman and Marc Shmuger (the former of which produced De Palma’s version) are moving forward with a third big screen take on Scarface, which will follow a Mexican lead in present-day Los Angeles. The character will keep the first name of Tony from the De Palma version, but will have a different last name.

HBO’s Nightingale, Starring David Oyelowo, to Debut May 29

2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards

President of HBO programming, Michael Lombardo, announced today that the HBO Films single-character drama Nightingale, starring Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo (Selma), will debut Friday, May 29.

Directed by Elliott Lester from a screenplay by Frederick Mensch, Nightingale is a provocative drama that probes the darkest corners of a disturbed mind, as a war veteran begins to unravel thread by thread. This searing story of solitude and isolation offers a poignant look at how life has failed one man.

“We are proud to be partnered with Plan B on this bold and powerful film,” said Lombardo. “This extraordinary solo performance by the incomparably talented David Oyelowo clearly demonstrates why he is one of the most gifted actors today.”

“We are thrilled and honored to help bring ‘Nightingale’ to an audience,” says executive producer Brad Pitt. “Sincere props to our friends at HBO for giving this extraordinary and courageous film its day.”

Nightingale is a Cinderella story for first-time writer Frederick Mensch, whose screenplay was submitted on The Blacklist and caught the eye of executive producer Josh Weinstock, who brought it to the attention of director Elliott Lester. The two took the material to Katrina Wolfe of BN Films, which came on board to produce and finance the film.

With a production design by Richard Lassalle and lensing by Pieter Vermeer, Lester uses vivid and imaginative imagery to explore the character’s traumatized psyche.

Nightingale is an HBO Films presentation in association with Plan B Entertainment; a BN Films production in association with Sea Smoke Entertainment and Yoruba Saxon Productions. Directed by Elliott Lester from a screenplay by Frederick Mensch, it is executive produced by Josh Weinstock, Katrina Wolfe and Elliott Lester, as well as Plan B’s Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. David Oyelowo also serves as executive producer. Co-executive producers are BN’s Lucas Akoskin and Jonathan Gray, in addition to Alex Garcia of BN/AG Studios.

Get Hard Review

get hard reviewRating: 2.5 out of 10

Alison Brie as Alissa
T.I. as Russell
Craig T. Nelson as Martin

Matt Walsh
Dan Bakkedahl as Rick
Dominique Perry as Shonda

Directed by Etan Cohen

Story:

After being prosecuted for fraud and embezzlement, wealthy stockbroker James King (Will Ferrell) is sentenced to ten years at San Quentin, giving him just thirty days to get his business in order. When he learns of the horrors he can expect in prison, he turns to Darnell (Kevin Hart), who runs his local car wash, to help teach him how to survive in jail, under the misapprehension that Darnell has been in jail himself.

Analysis:

In a year where the attempt to find an even remotely funny comedy has reached desperate levels, we instead get another high concept comedy in which a white guy hires Kevin Hart to save his ass, though in this case it’s quite literal.

It takes nearly twenty minutes to get to the flimsy premise described above, as the movie’s intro bounces between two very different men to contract their lives: Will Ferrell’s stockbroker James King and Hart’s Darnell, who manages a car wash and has money issues. Ferrell’s character is fairly deplorable and his money-grubbing trophy fiancée Alissa (Alison Brie) is even worse, clearly just loving him for his money, which she spends frivolously. It isn’t the most groundbreaking set-up and the fact that the two men have nothing in common gives some hope that bringing them together will make it worth it.

The main joke is supposed to be that Kevin Hart’s Darnell is not a tough black man who spent time in prison, but rather a polo shirt-wearing family man with a young daughter he wants to get out of the tough South Central school she attends. In fact, Darnell’s wife is tougher than him, but King is one of those closeted rich racists who quickly show their true colors when given the chance—think Donald Sterling or Paula Dean—so he assumes Darnell has been in jail merely from the color of his skin.

Note to filmmakers: When you base the very premise of your comedy on very real racism that exists in this country, the only place you can go is down… and that’s exactly where Get Hard goes.

Listen, many of us have seen “Oz” or other prison movies and know what sort of things happen in jail to the weak and easily preyed upon, but Get Hard goes way overboard in trying to drive the point home that King will most likely get raped as soon as he gets into prison. And that’s pretty much the single running joke that drives the entire plot. Ferrell and Hart are both great comedy improvisers, but instead of tapping into that fountain of humor, we get a constant stream of jokes about rape and sexual harassment in jail, which isn’t even remotely funny. But then that sums up Get Hard in a nutshell: “Not funny.”

In one scene, Hart portrays some of the potential denizens of a typical jail yard, including a Latino and a gay inmate, proving that you don’t have to be white to be racist. In another scene, he brings King to a café where he might easily find a gay man who will allow him to practice oral sex, since nothing else seems to be working. That leads to an awkward encounter in a bathroom stall between Ferrell, Matt Walsh and a prosthetic penis that causes more squirms than laughs.

If that isn’t uncomfortable enough, Darnell then brings King to a tough black neighborhood to get in with his cousin’s gang, the Crenshaw Kings, in hopes they’ll protect him in jail, and when that doesn’t work, they turn to a white supremacist motorcycle gang. Basically, they’re constantly reaching to the lowest point of the barrel trying to find laughs.

Ferrell has gone a long way to get out of his contest with Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey to being the most annoying comedian making movies, but this one takes him back to some of his worst roles where he’s just allowed to run rampant with no boundaries given to him by first-time director Etan Cohen. His attempt to act threatening by making faces in an attempt to “mad dog” anyone that comes after him is a joke that quickly runs thin and you do not want to even know what “kiestering” is, but it’s as bad as it sounds. The only scenes that work even remotely are the ones where Ferrell is trying to bond with the Crenshaw gang, but it’s as ridiculous and stupid as everything else.

Eventually, they figure out that since James claims to be innocent, they should find who actually has been embezzling the money, as it moves into a plot that makes more sense, but by then, we’ve already been subjected to so much racist and homophobic humor that it’s hard to allow any sort of redemption for King. Despite his time spent with Darnell, King’s transformation is neither believable nor earned.

I’m fairly surprised this was produced by Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions, because they generally have a better track record with the likes of Anchorman and Step Brothers. Also, one might think that a company that would get rid of the gunshots in their logo to be more sensitive to shooting victims would be more aware of how offensive this movie is likely to be. I’m all for breaking taboos and not being overly-PC when it comes to comedy, but there is a line and Get Hard crossed it as soon as someone read the script and greenlit it.

The Bottom Line:

Get Hard may not have any redeeming qualities whatsoever, but at least we finally get a comedy that homophobes, racists and generally stupid people can all enjoy together!

Steven Spielberg’s Dramatic Thriller Titled Bridge of Spies

Bridge of Spies

DreamWorks Pictures’/Fox 2000 Pictures’ upcoming dramatic thriller directed by three-time Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List) and starring two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Philadelphia), has been titled Bridge of Spies. In addition, 12-time Oscar nominee Thomas Newman (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Saving Mr. Banks) has been signed to score the film, as John Williams’ schedule was interrupted and he was unavailable to score the film due to a minor health issue, now corrected.

A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, Bridge of Spies tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Screenwriters Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen have woven this remarkable experience in Donovan’s life into a story inspired by true events that captures the essence of a man who risked everything and vividly brings his personal journey to life. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on October 16, 2015.

Williams, whose credits include Stars Wars: The Force Awakens and the “Harry Potter” films, will join Spielberg on his next film, The BFG, beginning later this year, continuing their unprecedented collaboration which they have enjoyed for over 40 years.

Newman has scored many films for DreamWorks, including The Help, Road to Perdition and American Beauty, the latter two for which he received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score.

Bridge of Spies also stars three-time Tony Award winner Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, a KGB agent defended by Donovan; Scott Shepherd as CIA operative Hoffman; Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan as James’ wife, Mary; Sebastian Koch as East German lawyer Vogel; and Academy Award nominee Alan Alda as Thomas Watters, a partner at Donovan’s law firm.

Fox 2000 Pictures co-financed Bridge of Spies with DreamWorks in association with Participant Media, and will distribute internationally. Disney will handle domestic distribution. In addition to directing, Spielberg will produce the film with Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger, with Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by Matt Charman and three-time Academy Award winners Ethan Coen & Joel Coen.

Starz today announced the return of original series “Power” on Saturday, June 6th at 9pm ET/PT. The second season of “Power” features ten hour-long episodes, a bump from the first season’s order of eight episodes.

Season 1 of “Power” was well-received by both critics and fans, earning rave reviews and steadily increasing viewership throughout the season. Season two picks up right where it left off: James “Ghost” St. Patrick doubling down on his drug business to save his nightclub and dream of a legitimate future. Ghost’s work troubles pale in comparison to juggling his relationship with his wife, Tasha, and his first love, Angela, who’s also an Assistant US Attorney investigating his drug organization.

Ghost is set further back from his dream by his business partner, Tommy, who loves the drug game, and his former mentor, Kanan, fresh out of jail and looking for revenge. Ghost is in a race against himself: Can he get out of the drug game alive before Angela discovers who he is?
