Horrors of Child Abuse in 1960’s Never Take Sweets from a Stranger

Early Hammer Horror Never Take Sweets from a Stranger is a dark, terrifying examination of the horrors of pedophilia

Early Hammer Horror __film Never Take Sweets from a Stranger is a dark, terrifying examination of the horrors of pedophilia

Before their brand became synonymous with Gothic horror fantasies dripping with promises of Freudian sex and death, Hammer Films steadily pumped out a series of quality British melodramas, mysteries and Hitchcockian thrillers, most of them produced economically in black and white and exported internationally by major studios with little fanfare. But in circling back on these early curiosities — many of which were produced well into the early 1960s — one can find some remarkable motion pictures, many of which are bold, daring and way ahead of their time.

Among the most alarming of that lot is director Cyril Frankel’s Never Take Sweets from a Stranger (re-titled Never Take Candy from a Stranger for its U.S. release), a jet-black and shocking thriller (based on the play The Pony Trap by Roger Garis)  and a __film that, despite its vintage, nevertheless packs a wallop. It’s a movie whose dismal truths about how the powerful buy silence and how children must suffer the sins of their elders tragically and endlessly. And it doesn’t go down easy.

Nine-year-old Jean (Janina Faye, from Hammer’s Horror of Dracula) has just moved to small town in Ontario, Canada with her parents Peter (Patrick Allen) and Sally (Gwen Watford), after dear Dad accepts a prominent position as the new principal of the local school. One day while playing with her new friend Lucille, the pair wander off to the manor of the town’s most powerful family, the Olderberrys, when Lucille confides that the old man who lives there will give them free candy. When Jean comes home that night, she rather matter-of-factly tells her parents that the skeezy Mr. Olderberry (Felix Aylmer, who is chilling) did indeed ply them with sweets in exchange for the young girls to remove their clothes and dance naked for them. Peter and Sally are horrified and, later that night when Jean wakes up screaming from a nightmare, mom and dad decide to action.

But as they soon learn, the town is rather adept at keeping its secrets safe. After relaying the tale to some prominent school officials, Peter gleans that people are aware of Mr. Olderberry’s pedophiliac leaning and there have been previous “incidents,” but everyone has turned a blind eye. Peter presses charges even though he’s warned of social isolation and worse if he proceeds. When the old man’s son, Clarence Olderberry Jr. (Bill Nagy), shows up to their home and urges them to drop the charges, Peter and Sally refuse and the younger man swears to decimate the little girl on the stands in the inevitable trial. Soon little Jean is ostracized from her peers, the family is persecuted and, when the old man is revoltingly cleared of his crimes by a crooked jury, they opt to leave the dour little hamlet. But they soon learn that the outrage they’ve endured is only the catalyst to the horror to come.

To call Never Take Sweets from a Stranger a horror film may seem like stretch, but it’s really not. There are no vampires, ghouls or werewolves running around this picture, rather the threat is fear and ignorance, the monster is power and privilege and the poison at its core is one human being’s psychotic addiction to sexually abusing and murdering children. The latter element? Well, I can think of few things more horrifying. As adults, we find novel ways to mess up our lives and the lives of others. But we keep making more of us in hopes of creating better versions of ourselves, successors who will hopefully learn from us, from our triumphs and errors. It’s a universal, biological law that we are here to protect children, to nurture them and show them the beauty in the world before adulthood begins to chip away at the perception of the purity of that beauty. And when an adult ends up willingly breaking that law, it’s unforgivable.

Director Frankel would later go on the helm Hammer’s supernatural drama The Witches and that’s a strong film. This one is stronger. Frankel allows the literacy of the stage play drive the film and fleshes out the dialogue-heavy drama with many nightmarish sequences of children in jeopardy. It’s like a British “social issues” version of Night of the Hunter in some respects, with children targeted by those they are told to trust and it’s a theme that marked many of these early Hammer thrillers, movies like the equally mesmerizing (if more conventional) evil parent shocker The Snorkel. And Hammer legend and Oscar-winning DP Freddie Francis brings an almost fairy tale beauty to much of the outdoor sequences, especially the scenes of the children fleeing for their lives.

Still toiling in relative obscurity, those who have experienced Never Take Sweets from a Stranger sing of its praises and with good reason. It’s a dark, uncompromising film, serious, smart and wildly upsetting. Seek it out…

Michael Keaton and Jon Watts on Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Michael Keaton on Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Michael Keaton on Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Following three new posters, which you can view in the gallery below, Michael Keaton and director Jon Watts have spoken to USA Today about his Keaton’s portrayal of the villain Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

“My whole approach for this movie is that we’ve seen the penthouse level of the (Marvel) universe,” said Watts. “We’ve seen what it’s like to be a billionaire inventor and to be a Norse god. We’ve seen the very top of this world. But we’ve never seen what it’s like to be just a regular joe.”

“Some people see themselves as victims — he sees himself a little bit like that,” Keaton added. “He probably would have a strong argument that he never got a fair shot — a lot of ‘Why not me? Where’s mine?’”

In the film, Adrian Toomes (Keaton) runs a New York salvaging company that cleans up messes such as the ones left by big superhero battles. He becomes irked, however, when a new government organization founded by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) steps in to take over after one altercation. Toomes and his crew — including the Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine) and the Tinkerer (Michael Chernus) — use scavenged alien artifacts and stolen advanced tech to put together weaponry to sell to other criminals.

Watts said he gets to use “this neat junk from all the other movies. It’s a really great starting point for the villains to have the Vulture picking over the stuff and finding the valuable exotic elements and having the Tinkerer assemble into something that could be used.”

The director revealed he found inspiration for Vulture’s “ground-level perspective” in John C. Reilly’s supporting character in Guardians of the Galaxy.

“I like the idea that in these huge movies, you pick out one extra and you’re like, ‘What does he think of all this?’” Watts said. “Sometimes these movies are so casual about just destroying whole cities and incredible things happen and everyone’s like, ‘Eh, whatever.’ If that really happened, it would be amazing and change everything.”

The Best Film in 30 Movie Trilogies

The Best __film in 30 Movie Trilogies

The striking critical and commercial success of Logan — currently tallying over $565 million worldwide and counting — has many hailing it as not only the best __film in the Wolverine trilogy but the best among ALL THREE of the existing X-Men trilogies (X-Men, First Class, Wolverine). Given that tremendous reaction, we thought we’d look back at some other movie trilogies in all different genres to try and figure out what the best entry in each of them is. Some of the choices might be controversial, but we think you’ll agree on quite a few. Check out The Best Film in 30 Movie Trilogies gallery below!

We tried to avoid movie trilogies with an obvious dip in quality after the first one (Beverly Hills Cop, RoboCop, The Hangover, Friday, etc) or trilogies where there honestly just wasn’t a good movie in the bunch. And, of course, we avoided movie series where there were more than (or less than) three films!

Click here to order the Before Trilogy on Criterion Collection Blu-ray!

This feature comes during a month when The Criterion Collection has released Richard Linklater’s much-lauded Before Trilogy in a beautiful new Blu-ray box set. Besides gorgeous new 2K restored transfers of Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, it also features several new features including an interview with Linklater, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

Do you agree with our movie trilogies choices? Is there another trilogy that was overlooked? Let us know in the comments below!

The Walking Dead Episode 715 recap and season finale previews

We get off to a slow start. Rick’s crew is heading out to speak to the Oceanside group. Sasha is in the room that was once Daryl’s cell. Maggie is helping teach the Hilltoppers how to garden – while Gregory observes suspiciously. And a yacht has crashed on a beach, spilling out dozens of barnacled walkers.

Let’s start with Sasha. David comes in to check on her. She asks for water; he runs his hand salaciously over her shoulder. “If I give you some water, will you do something for me?” He rips her t-shirt and Sasha seethes. She head butts him, which only spurs David on. “Fighting is just gonna make it last longer.” He starts to unbuckle his pants when Negan, a champion for women’s rights, comes in and puts a stop to the impending rape. Negan points out that rape is against the rules here, and jams a huge knife into his neck. He sends his posse to get Sasha a new t-shirt and unties her. He remembers her and compliments her “beach ball sized lady nuts.” He rambles on for a bit, then puts his knife down in front of her, giving her a few options. She can try to take him out – and fail. She can kill herself. She can wait for Rapey Davey to turn and let him eat her face. Or she can put the knife in his head. He is now a man short, and wants Sasha to help him run the place. He leaves her to think it over.

Eugene comes to see Sasha, bringing with him a cup of water, a blanket, and a pillow. Eugene tells her that the Saviors are keeping him safe and suggests she take Negan up on his offer. He did it because he thought he could be brave, but he can’t. Sasha tells him to go. David is waking up, and he looks hungry.

When Negan comes back, David has been knifed, and Sasha is standing. “You win,” she tells him. Negan is overjoyed. “Nah, you win!” He sends his men to clean up the David mess and get her some more creature comforts. Negan takes back his knife and explains that she has to earn his trust in order to keep the knife. However, surrendering to him is a good start. He hears that Rick and his people are up to no good and wants Sasha to help him change that, make it a “win-win” for all involved – but mostly for Negan.

The Walking Dead Episode 715 Recap and Season Finale Previews

Eugene comes back to Sasha, but speaks to her through the door. She was wrong in surrendering to Negan. She had been prepared to die if she didn’t kill Negan, and now realizes she made the wrong choice. She doesn’t want Negan to use her against their friends, and wants to die. Sasha begs Eugene for a knife, a gun, a piece of glass, anything to end her life. She begs him. Eugene promises to consider it. We finally see Sasha, and she has an evil look on her face, even as she thanks him in a sweet, sad voice. Eugene returns a while later, and he decided to grant her request. He slips something under the door, and Sasha almost starts to cry when she sees it: a poison pill. That won’t help her kill Negan.

Maggie has gone outside the Hilltop walls to dig up a young blueberry plant, in order to replant it in the Hilltop. Gregory approaches, wanting to talk to her and worried that she came out here alone. He doesn’t know why Maggie is still there; after all, the doctor is gone. Gregory wants them to present a united front to the Hilltoppers, who Gregory has started to notice seem to be more devoted to Maggie than to him. Maggie wishes they were actually united, and Gregory apologizes. She appreciates that, and tells him it is never too late to change. She asks Gregory to keep watch while she carefully uproots the blueberry plant. He is happy to… but has a knife at his hip. As he waivers closer, a walker stumbles out of the woods. Glad for the distraction, Gregory volunteers to kill it, saying that he is here to protect the pregnant lady. He charges in, but gets grossed out and Maggie steps in to save the day. Another walker grabs Gregory from behind, and Maggie saves him from that one, too. Gregory vomits. A group of Hilltoppers stroll by, and Maggie explains that he hasn’t killed one before, but he’s learning. “That’s not what he told us,” the Hilltopper says.

Later, Gregory goes to his office, checks on a map of Virginia, and calls to Kal. He needs him to take him somewhere. Pack a bag.

Over at Oceanside, Tara is waiting for Natania in her house. She holds Natania at gunpoint and makes her sit. Cyndie comes in and gets the same treatment. Tara explains that her friends are going to come in and take their guns in order to go to war against the Saviors. They don’t want there to be any bloodshed. “We have other communities; with you, we could have an army,” Tara implores. All Natania has to do is talk to Rick, and she can signal for the siege to stop. Cyndie suggests they talk to Rick, but Natania refuses. Tara checks her watch. Time is up.

IMG_0620

An explosion goes off around the camp. Oceansiders run. Those who aren’t corralled together are brought to the group in ropes. Tara, still with Natania and Cyndie, assures them the explosions were outside the camp, and she hopes everyone is ok. The ladies knock Tara to the ground, and without being prompted, she hands over her gun. It’s empty. “We didn’t come here to hurt people,” Tara insists.

Outside, Rick assures everyone that no one needs to get hurt. Natania comes out with Tara at gunpoint. Rick demands she let Tara go. If she shoots Tara, Rick shoots Natania. Cyndie announces to the group that they want them to fight the Saviors. Tara insists they will win, with their guns, with or without them. Natania is still traumatized by the siege the Saviors put them through, and she knows she will die. She doesn’t get to finish that thought. Michonne, up in the trees, warns of walkers coming. Differences aside, the Oceansiders and the Alexandrians team up to kill the barnacled walkers who have made land. They work well together, and after the brief siege is over, Rick shakes hands with Beatrice. Natania still is not swayed. She is not working with them, but tells them to take the guns and leave.

Rick’s people gather the weapons while the women look on. Tara promises they will bring their guns back when they are done. Cyndie wants to go with them, as do some of the other women, but it is all or nothing. She thanks Tara for what they are doing.

The crew returns to Alexandria and are met at the gate by Rosita. She dodges questions about Sasha by telling them there is someone here to see them. She leads them to the prison cell, where Dwight is locked up. Daryl immediately tries to kill him; Rick holds him back. Rosita informs them that Dwight wants to help them. Dwight confirms. Rick says okay, puts his gun to Dwight’s head, and tells him to get on his knees.

Harmony Korine’s ‘Spring Breakers’ Being Turned Into Digital Television Series

"Spring Breakers"

“Spring Breakers”

The reckless debauchery of Harmony Korine’s contemporary cult classic “Spring Breakers” is coming to television. Deadline reports that Blackpills, a digital streaming platform that is expected to launch this year, has ordered a “Spring Breakers” digital TV series from the original film’s producers Chris Hanley and Fernando Sulichin. The adaptation is one of four scripted shows the producing duo is setting up at Blackpills. Korine won’t be involved.

READ MORE: Here’s Everything You Need to Know About the ‘Spring Breakers 2’ Scandal — So Far

“Spring Breakers” became an instant cult classic when it was released by A24 in March 2013. The film gained attention for casting tween icons Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Vanessa Hudgens in a more provocative light, but it cemented its status as a critical favorite after reviews found much to admire in Korine’s takedown of hedonistic millennial culture. James Franco earned rave reviews for playing the drug dealer who becomes a twisted father figure to the group of young girls after he bails them out of jail for a robbery. Gucci Mane and Rachel Korine also starred.

The producers and Blackpills are keeping further details under wraps for now, so it’s not confirmed whether or not the series will use the same characters or present an entirely different version of the events of the movie. Casting is currently in the works. Blackpills specializes in short-scripted content and will utilize an “unconventional digital format” for “Spring Breakers.” More details to come.

By late December of Oscar season, frontrunners have emerged that demand to be seen while contenders just on the bubble risk falling behind at the box office. Mike Mills’ wonderful coming-of-age drama “20th Century Women” is one such movie. The film, which earned Mills an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, didn’t break the $6 million mark, which is a shame considering what a gem of an experience it is.

She employs the help of two women to help her raise her teenage son (Lucas Jade Zumann): A counter-culture, punk-loving photographer named Abbie (an excellent Greta Gerwig) and the family’s more provocative young neighbor Julie (Elle Fanning). Mills’ script turns each woman into a multi-dimensional character, full of relatable complexities and irrisitble warmth.

In his A- review, IndieWire’s senior film critic David Ehrlich hailed the movie as Mill’s best effort to date. “’20th Century Women’ becomes an unambiguous celebration of women as pioneers, as protectors, and as invaluable role models for young men,” he wrote.

The movie comes to Blu-ray on March 28, but IndieWire is giving five readers the chance to win a free copy this week. Now through Tuesday, March 28 at noon ET, readers can enter by filling out the registration form embedded below. All that is required is your full name, valid email address and follows on our social media pages (if you already follow us, you’re already one step closer to entering). Yorgos Lanthimos and Colin Farrell Re-Teaming for Third Time in Amazon Television Series About Iran-Contra Affair

"The Lobster"

“The Lobster”

Yorgos Lanthimos and Colin Farrell are teaming up for a third time. The director and star are attached to Amazon’s new television drama series about the Iran-Contra affair, Variety reports. Farrell will star as former U.S. marine Oliver North, who took part in the sale of weapons to Iran, with the profits being channeled to the Contras in Nicaragua. Lanthimos will direct the series, which isn’t titled yet and is being written by Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson.

“I’m really excited to be working with Colin again on something quite different to what we have done so far,” Lanthimos told Variety in an official statement. “It makes me very confident and excited to be working on a script which, although based on relatively recent history, feels very fresh and relevant to our times.”

Added Amazon Studios’ Joe Lewis, “Great projects can stand out for the filmmaker, the talent, or the pure originality of the storytelling. Brilliant projects like this stand out by virtue of having all of those elements.”

Lanthimos and Farrell first teamed up for “The Lobster,” which many critics named one of the best films of last year. The pair recently finished production on “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” which co-stars Nicole Kidman and Alicia Silverstone. The film is expected to be in consideration for Cannes if post-production is completed in time.

This project marks the high profile second television series Lanthimos has gotten attached to this year. In January, the director signed on to helm AMC’s new dark comedy series starring Kirsten Dunst. Farrell can next be seen on the big screen in Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled,” which opens June 23.

‘The Carmichael Show’: How A Live Audience Taught the NBC Comedy What It Couldn’t Say About Oprah

THE CARMICHAEL -- "Man

Chris Haston/NBC

The cast of NBC’s “The Carmichael Show” learned an important lesson early in the show’s run: Be careful what you say about Oprah, or your live audience will turn against you.

“There are things that you learn from your audience about what upsets them,” star Loretta Devine said on Monday, during NBC’s annual summer press day. “We’ll find out something simple like you can’t talk about Oprah in certain situations. I can’t remember what the joke was, but it was something like ‘if Oprah died…’ and they just weren’t having it. There are certain things you can’t say about Oprah. You can’t put ‘Oprah’ and ‘death’ in the same sentence.”

But that doesn’t mean the NBC sitcom shies away from controversy. In fact, the exact opposite is true. “The Carmichael Show” built a reputation for taking on tough subjects during its first two seasons, and according to the cast, the upcoming third season more than follows up on that. Upcoming episodes include ones devoted to Joe (David Alan Grier) potentially having an illegitimate son; sexual assault; assisted suicide; “rules of being a black person” and the “N-word.”

“All these fun topics,” star and creator Jerrod Carmichael joked.

Here’s everything else IndieWire learned from Carmichael, Devine and Grier, including what Carmichael is watching on TV right now, why Grier thinks the __show is “Black-er” (and not “Black-ish”), and why Carmichael is holding off on tackling Trump.

Carmichael loves the current explosion of series featuring black voices, like “Atlanta.” “It’s great. It reminds me of my favorite eras of music, when a lot of my favorite artists would release albums on the same Tuesday. That was great. You went and bought all the albums. Great art contributes to great art. So I love what ‘Atlanta’s’ doing, that’s fun to watch. And hopefully it’s mutually satisfying.”

This is the sweater David Alan Grier wore to the NBC event.

“I’m getting a lot of sweater love today,” he said — and deservedly so.

Carmichael is still figuring out how he wants to approach the subject of Trump’s presidency. “I have a perspective on it, but I’m figuring out exactly how that translates. I don’t want to do the easy thing: ‘Trump is bad.’ It’s the easiest thing to do every week, you read three articles that say ‘blank’ takes down Donald Trump’ and they don’t. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it hasn’t been working. So I don’t want to contribute to noise. I want to contribute interest and perspective.”

Devine wasn’t always a fan of Carmichael’s. “I saw his comedy on the airplane when I was flying to New York for something, and I did not think he was funny at all. I was going, ‘Ooooh, no he didn’t’ more than I was laughing.”

Carmichael met co-stars LilRel Howery and Tiffany Haddish through the stand-up community. “Rel, I first saw him do stand-up on a YouTube video. I saw him in LA, and I ran up to him on the patio of the Comedy Store [and said] ‘I’m a huge fan of yours!’ And he’ll never admit this, but he was so off-put by it that he was like, ‘That’s good man, relax.’ He was, like, annoyed by me. And Tiffany, six years ago, yelled at me, ‘Find something for me to do!’ And so I did.”

When it comes to other shows, Carmichael watches “a little bit of everything.” “I don’t think I’ve seen the entire series of anything recently, but if it’s on TV I try to give it a shot. Anything from ‘Insecure’ to ‘BoJack Horseman,’ I’m watching it all.”

Grier’s perspective on the business has changed over the years. “The process of creation is always the same, it’s the measurement of success is different. If I see you on TV I’m going to go, ‘Wow you got a hit show.’ I’m not really following the ratings. As an actor, you can’t control that. My agents call me and say if it stinks or if it’s good.”

THE CARMICHAEL -- "New Neighbors" Episode 207 -- Pictured: (l-r) Jerrod Carmichael as Jerrod Carmichael, Loretta Devine as Cynthia Carmichael, David Alan Grier as Joe Carmichael -- (Photo by: Chris Haston/NBC)

Working with network executives has been a positive experience for Carmichael (except for the Standards department). “I really think that a lot of the things we do is the reason why a lot of these executives got into television. I think people inherently don’t want to make mindless things. They want to be excited by the content they’re making. And I think the things we talk about excite them because they’re true and it’s real. So as reluctant as Standards is, I think a lot of the executives are excited by the subject matter. It’s alluring to see how we can pull that off in 22 minutes. I think we speak to that place inside of them. [laughs] Either that or they hate us. I think they love us though.”

Devine is intrigued by the way the __show challenges Standards and Practices. “If the N-word airs I’ll be shocked, but they said they used it a lot back in the ’70s, and I was aware of it. There are some things that have become politically correct and it’ll be interesting to see what boundaries you can cross, and how this show crosses them in a humorous sort of way.” [Note: Carmichael has confirmed that the N-word will be said unedited in the upcoming episode.]

How Carmichael prepares Devine for a potentially tough episode: “He always hugs me when something bad is coming,” she said.

THE CARMICHAEL -- "New Neighbors" Episode 207 -- Pictured: (l-r) Loretta Devine as Cynthia Carmichael, Jerrod Carmichael as Jerrod Carmichael -- (Photo by: Chris Haston/NBC)

When it comes to the multi-camera format, Carmichael sees the potential for innovation in the writing. “We have a great director — this season Gerry Cohen is directing all of our episodes — and we’re having so much fun finding new ways visually to bring life to the format, so it’s these subtle changes. But the truth of it is that of a stage play and it’s all about connectivity with the audience, both immediate and on television. So breathing new life is mostly through material, and that’s reinvigorating.”

How have things changed for Devine since she starred in “A Different World”? I have a little more voice now than I did… I can say ‘I don’t like this’ and be done with it. I care so much about everything coming out as the truth, which is a major theme of Jerrod’s. The show brings a great amount of honesty… And you can fight for things, Jerrod will listen. He’ll go ‘Okay, okay.’ So I love my job in that way because I feel like I’m a part of everything that it is and I care a lot about it.”

And what does Devine fight for? “I always feel that the show is very male-driven because of the relationship that Jerrod has with his father and his brother. They like to talk to them, and sometimes I think that the women are excluded. So I’m always fighting to get the mother in there, to have her opinion known, and to have the women’s opinions known. Those are the kind of fights I can have these days that I was too afraid to have on ‘A Different World,’ where I read the script that was given to me.”

For Grier, the more real the episode, the better. “The episodes I like doing are the ones in which comedy and tragedy were just smacked together, but that’s how life is. You know there are so many times when you’re in deep pain, but you’re making the most inopportune jokes. But you have to, to release that pressure. As an actor, as a communicator, I like those moments and hopefully they work, because that’s so real. There’s no ‘ish’ in our show. We’re not ‘Black-ish,’ we’re ‘Black-er.’ Emotional-er. Not -ish. That’s what I like.”

“The Carmichael Show” Season 3 premieres May 31 on NBC.

Avengers: Infinity War Adds Motion-Capture Actor Terry Notary

Avengers: Infinity War Adds Motion-Capture Actor Terry Notary

Avengers: Infinity War adds motion-capture actor Terry Notary

Though you may not know his name, you’re undoubtedly familiar with motion-capture actor Terry Notary, who has played Rocket in the past two Planet of the Apes movies (and the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes) and even plays the title monster in Kong: Skull Island. Now the actor will be making the leap to another giant franchise, as Notary confirms to The Hollywood Reporter he’ll play a role in Avengers: Infinity War.

“I’m working on four characters right now. I’m working with Josh Brolin and three other actors [in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War], and I’m playing Josh Brolin’s right hand bad guy in the film. I can’t say the name of the character or I think Marvel will sever my head, but I apply those same principals of what it means to drop bullsh*t and just play a character truly evil. And it’s working. [Laughs] It’s truly working.”

Despite his appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron where he bellowed out “I’ll do it myself,” Thanos has actually been somewhat of a team player in the pages of Marvel Comics. His group alliances have previously included the Infinity Watch, the Black Order and most recently the Cabal. It remains to be seen if any of these groups will appear in the __film and which of their members Notary will be playing for the feature, but sound off with your best guesses in the comments below!

Filming officially started on Monday, January 23, 2017 for the Avengers sequel, which sees Earth’s Mightiest Heroes teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to take on Brolin’s Thanos.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who return after Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, are directing both Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled fourth film, which are filming back-to-back in Atlanta and are written by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Both films will also be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is slated for a release in theaters on May 4, 2018, with its follow-up set to open on May 3, 2019.

Having established a secret base on Atollon, the Ghost crew, now led by a more powerful Ezra, have been strengthening the rebel fleet by acquiring new resources and recruits eager to stand against the Empire. However, the Imperial efforts to eliminate the rebellion are now being led by the coldly analytical Grand Admiral Thrawn, whose strategic, tactical and cultural insights make him a threat unlike any they have faced before. In season three, Ezra and Sabine take on new roles and challenges as the rebels prepare for their biggest mission yet – a direct assault on the Empire.

“Twin Suns” begins when Maul returns to Tatooine, ready for his final revenge against Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Star Wars Rebels is created by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past), and Carrie Beck. The Lucasfilm Animation production is executive produced by Filoni and Kinberg, and co-executive produced by Henry Gilroy.

CBS Moves Training Day to Saturday Nights

CBS moves Training Day to Saturday night

CBS moves Training Day to Saturday nights

The CBS series Training Day is moving to Saturday nights, according to Variety. This move comes after the February 25, 2017 passing of star Bill Paxton at 61 from complications during surgery. The show’s official Twitter page posted a tribute to Paxton that you can see below. The show, which had been airing on Thursday nights at 10 p.m., will be replaced by the new season of The Amazing Race, which will premiere on March 30. It was originally scheduled to return on Fridays beginning April 21.

Training Day had wrapped production on its first season back in December and the network has yet to announce if it will return for another. Other TV shows have survived the death of their star, including News Radio (Phil Hartman), 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter (John Ritter), and The West Wing (John Spencer).

In a recent interview before his death, co-star Katrina Law spoke to ComingSoon.net about working with Paxton. She said, “Bill is one of the best team leaders you could ask for. He comes to work every single day with a smile on his face, and he says, “Good morning breakfast lovers!” He just starts the day off right. He’s got a positive attitude. He’s got so much work to do, as you can tell from the three episodes that you’ve watched, all he does is talk the entire time. So he has a lot on his plate that he has to handle and he gets it done everyday, and at the end of the day, he walks away with a smile and makes sure that everybody stays in line. He’s so positive and so professional. And funny! So funny!”

Training Day is a crime thriller starring the late Paxton and Justin Cornwell (Empire) that began 15 years after the events of the feature film, about a young, idealistic police officer who is tapped to go undercover in an elite squad of the LAPD where he partners with a morally ambiguous veteran detective. Law (Spartacus), Drew Van Acker (Pretty Little Liars), Lex Scott Davis (Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart), Julie Benz (Dexter), Christina Vidal (Welcome to the Dollhouse) and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Without a Trace) also star.

The 100 Season 5 is on the way! Will you watch The 100 Season 5?

The CW announced today that The 100 Season 5 is officially on the way

The CW has today confirmed that The 100 Season 5 is on the way and will premiere in the 2017-18 season. The hit sci-fi series launched its fourth season last month with the next new episode, 4×06 titled “We Will Rise,” set to air next Wednesday, March 15.

RELATED: 100 Season 4 trailer released by The CW

Ninety-seven years ago, nuclear Armageddon decimated planet Earth, destroying civilization. The only survivors were the 400 inhabitants of 12 international space stations that were in orbit at the time. Three generations have been born in space, the survivors now number 4,000, and resources are running out on their dying “Ark” – the 12 stations now linked together and repurposed to keep the survivors alive. Draconian measures including capital punishment and population control are the order of the day, as the leaders of the Ark take ruthless steps to ensure their future, including secretly exiling a group of 100 juvenile prisoners to the Earth’s surface to test whether it’s habitable.

The fourth season picks up right where we left off. Clarke has just learned the human race is doomed to face an unbeatable enemy. Alie was telling the truth. The remaining nuclear reactors on Earth are melting and will set the atmosphere on fire. Can our heroes find hope knowing the end is inevitable? Will they spend their remaining days trying to survive? Or will they use their limited time to finally live? The stakes have never been higher, alliances are breaking, and the world is about to collapse. Civility has no place at the end of the world and there’s no telling what lengths our heroes can and will go to in order to survive.

The 100 stars Eliza Taylor as Clarke, Paige Turco as Dr. Abby Griffin, Bob Morley as Bellamy, Marie Avgeropoulos as Octavia, Devon Bostick as Jasper, Lindsey Morgan as Raven, Ricky Whittle as Lincoln, Christopher Larkin as Monty, Richard Harmon as Murphy, with Isaiah Washington as Chancellor Jaha and Henry Ian Cusick as Marcus Kane.

Based on the book series by Kass Morgan, The 100 is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Jason Rothenberg and Leslie Morgenstein (The Vampire Diaries).

Legendary Creates MonsterVerse Writer

Legendary creates MonsterVerse writer’s room for Godzilla vs King Kong

THR brings word that Legendary Pictures has assembled a “writer’s room” for the upcoming Godzilla vs King Kong movie, set for a 2020 release.

Terry Rossio, co-writer of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (who also holds story credit on 1998’s Godzilla), will lead the room along with Star Trek Beyond and Star Trek 4 writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. The writer’s room also includes The Kingkiller Chronicles writer Lindsey Beer, Queen of the Air writer Cat Vasko, Maze Runner and Pacific Rim: Uprising writer T.S. Nowlin, and comic and television writer J. Michael Straczynski. No director is currently attached to Godzilla vs King Kong.

Kong: Skull Island is the most recent entry in the MonsterVerse, the second chapter following 2014’s Godzilla. The next will be Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which has Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat director Michael Dougherty set to helm with Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown attached to star. It will be released in theaters on March 22, 2019.

Writer’s rooms have become a studio favorite for cinematic universes, with Paramount putting together two in the past few years, one for Transformers and another for their other Hasbro-based properties. Universal Studios has also created one in the past for their own Classic Monsters universe.

Jaime King and 50 Cent join Escape Plan 2

Following yesterday’s reveal that Dave Bautista had joined the cast of the upcoming Escape Plan 2, Deadline reports two more additions to the cast with Jaime King (Sin City, Hart of Dixie) and Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson (Get Rich or Die Tryin’). King is set to play the role of Abigail Ross in the __film while Jackson will reprise his role of ‘Hush’ from the first film.

The pair join Sylvester Stallone in the sequel.  Steven C. Miller (Marauders, Arsenal) is set to direct.

The original Escape Plan followed one of the world’s foremost authorities on structural security, who agrees to take on one last job: breaking out of an ultra-secret, high-tech facility called “The Tomb.” Deceived and wrongly imprisoned, Ray Breslin (Stallone) must recruit fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger) to help devise a daring, nearly impossible plan to escape from the most protected and fortified prison ever built.

Escape Plan was released by Summit Entertainment in 2013, and though it only grossed $25 million domestically, it took in $137 million worldwide with the bulk of the international gross coming from China. Original screenwriter Miles Chapman will return to pen the sequel, which is looking to soon begin production in Atlanta.

The first film also starred Jim Caviezel, Vinnie Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio and Amy Ryan.

Escape Plan 2 is a co-production between Emmett/Furla/Oasis and Chinese company Leomus Pictures.

Bill Murray Sings A Happy Tune In Paul Shaffer’s New Animated Music Video — Watch

Paul Shaffer and Bill Murray’s animated avatars in “Happy Street.”

As is clear from his stint slinging drinks at the opening of his son’s bar in Brooklyn, Bill Murray would do anything to help out his loved ones. For his latest experiment, the beloved actor and comedian recorded a vocal track on a tenaciously upbeat song from Paul Shaffer’s new album, released today with a cute animated music video.

Shaffer is best known to television fans as Dave Letterman’s music director and sidekick on “The Late Show,” though that position is has been held by New Orleans musician Jon Batiste since Stephen Colbert took over. Reverting to their earlier name, Paul Shaffer & The World’s Most Dangerous Band, Shaffer and his fellow “Late Show” musicians are about to tour a new album, which features an eclectic mix of guest vocalists.

In addition to Murray, Shaffer’s collaborators include Rilo Kiley front woman Jenny Lewis; Ashford & Simpson‘s Valerie Simpson; and Shaggy.

Murray’s duet with Shaffer is called “Happy Street,” and is an almost cloyingly positive toe tapper. In the video, a cartoon Shaffer and Murray bop down the street spreading joy and cheer to everyone they meet. (Those are pretty much the lyrics). The sheer force of cheerfulness in the song results in an averted bank robbery, an impromptu parade, and even a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it “Life Aquatic” reference.

Murray won’t be playing the Met anytime soon, but he holds his own and stays on pitch. It’s enough to get a musical lover imagining things, like what that “My Fair Lady” remake might look like with Murray as Henry Higgins.

‘Brimstone’ Review: Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce Star In a Gnarly Revisionist Western That Trembles With Biblical Weight

Guy Pearce in Brimstone

“Brimstone”

Reverent and ridiculous in equal measure, Martin Koolhoven’s “Brimstone” is a wild pseudo-Western that trembles beneath the biblical weight of its comically grim story. Told with a steady tone that marries the anivine retribution of the Old Testament with the heightened slickness of a graphic novel, this gruesome carnival of debasement may be set in the lawless frontiers of 19th century America, but it might be more accurately located somewhere between Sodom and Gomorrah and “Sin City.” It’s the kind of movie in which an actor from “Game of Thrones” murders someone who’s taking a shit in an outhouse — the kind of movie in which a dying man, choking on a noose made out of his own intestines, still finds the spirit to tell his wife that he loves her.

Even after four discrete chapters (each of which is saddled with a subtitle like “Revelation” or “Exodus”) and 148 minutes of incest and murder, it’s hard to tell just how seriously Koolhoven takes himself. While ostensibly a proto-feminist empowerment tale about the horrors that women have suffered in the supposed pursuit of piety, “Brimstone” doesn’t hide how much fun it’s having during the sequence that’s set inside a pioneer town brothel, nor does it do anything to dissuade viewers from the idea that its villain — a black-eyed preacher played by Guy Pearce — has literally clawed his way out of hell.

Sometimes Koolhoven seems as though he shares the impish sense of humor that has always characterized the work of Lars von Trier, and sometimes it seems as though he’s never laughed in his life. That uncertainty, and the nagging desire to solve it, is at the troubled soul of what makes “Brimstone” such a strangely compelling experience. Without it, the film would neither be lucid enough to work as a moral epic, nor exciting enough to work as a Western.

Among the most expensive Dutch movies ever made (a luxury that Koolhoven earned for himself with a string of local hits like “Winter in Wartime” and “Happy Family”), “Brimstone” begins in a small village where a mute young woman called Liz (Dakota Fanning, never better) works as a midwife with the support of her much older husband. But that simple idyll is soured in a bad way when a badly scarred Reverend (Pearce) strolls into town, stepping up to the pulpit of the local church like he owns the place and raining verbal hellfire upon the petrified congregation.

No one in the crowd, however, is more scared than Liz, who recognizes that voice from her past and knows the bloodshed it portends. The Reverend, you see, is Liz’s father come to claim her. He might like to berate his flock about the dangers of false prophets and warn them of wolves in sheep’s clothing, but the Reverend doesn’t practice what he preaches. He wants to marry his daughter, and — like a sexually debased Anton Chigurh — he’ll kill anyone who gets in his way.

A character actor whose talents have too often been obscured by his chiseled looks, Pearce hasn’t been this captivating since the days of “Ravenous” and “Memento.” In fact, the latter must have been a major touchstone for Koolhoven — not only does he cast that film’s star as another sociopath who twists his perception of the world to make sense of his sick desires, but the director also borrows its narrative device, unspooling “Brimstone” in reverse. While the first chapter sets up the final conflict between Liz and the Reverend and the final one loops around to see it play out, the two bits in between chronicle Liz’s childhood and her formative years in a whorehouse (but not in that order).

Dakota Fanning Brimstone

“Brimstone”

If that approach felt inextricable from the story Christopher Nolan was telling, its purpose in Koolhoven’s saga is decidedly less evident. There’s a certain sadistic pleasure to be had in waiting for these characters to suffer the mutilations they wear in later segments, but that queasy suspense isn’t enough to offset what the narrative structure does to dilute the Reverend’s infernal momentum. Likewise, the Old Testament feeling that comes with working our way back to Genesis isn’t enough to compensate for how flat the climactic showdown feels after spending nearly two hours away from the moments that lead up to it.

Still, the vast expanse in between has plenty of sights to see. There’s “Wetlands” star Carla Juri as a permed prostitute with a nose for trouble, and Kit Harrington pops up as a red-blooded cowboy who acts like a veritable saint compared to the rest of the men in this slaughterhouse. Carice van Houten (also on vacation from Westeros), plays the Reverend’s wife, whom he drags around in a barbaric face collar — Pearce and van Houten fell in love and had a child on the set, who is really going to hate being asked how his parents met.

If, for all of its godawful men, “Brimstone” has a hard time sewing its feminist fervor into anything more than a thin shawl over its bleak spectacle, this disturbingly watchable religious Western makes a solid case that hell is a place on Earth.

Grade: C+

“Brimstone” opens in theaters on Friday, March 10.

Glenn Howerton May Not Return to ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ After Tonight’s Season 12 Finale

The D.E.N.N.I.S. System may be coming to an end. The Wrap reports that, after “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” ends its 12th season and goes on an extended hiatus beginning tonight, Glenn Howerton may not return to the irreverent comedy series. “The option to come back is there, is in place,” the actor tells The Wrap. “It’s very much a creative decision.”

Howerton was recently cast in an NBC pilot alongside Patton Oswalt, but it seems that hasn’t factored into his decision — Kaitlin Olsen currently stars on “The Mick” and is still signed on to “It’s Always Sunny” through seasons 13 and 14. “Without dancing around it too much…anything is possible,” Howerton says of a possible return. “It is possible but it’s hard for me to say what seems probable at this point. It’s definitely not a foregone conclusion that I won’t be coming back.”

Howerton has co-starred in “Sunny” since it first premiered in 2005, as have Olsen, Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney, who also created the series; Danny DeVito joined at the beginning of season two.
