The Joker Origins and Evolutions

The Joker Origins and Evolutions

The Joker Origins and Evolutions takes a look at the history of the character

The Clown Prince of Crime, an agent of chaos, Mr. J… the biggest bad of all comic book history has many names, but he’s just The Joker to those of us wise enough to fear him.

What makes The Joker so interesting in the grand scheme of comic book history is his longstanding ability to reshape himself as a villain with the times, not only in physical terms but in the types of crimes he commits. From simple trickster to supernatural force of evil, there’s really no stopping him.

Starting with his first appearance in Batman #1 all the way back in 1940 (with a quick trip even further back) and going through the major incarnations of the character and where we’ll be seeing him in the future, you can read our latest entry in the Origins and Evolutions series all about The Joker below!

The New Jumanji Cast Offers a Triple Update

The New Jumanji Cast Offers a Triple Update.

Check out new Jumanji set photos from stars Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson

As production continues on Sony Pictures‘ new Jumanji movie, the cast is back with a triple round of behind the scenes social media posts. In the first, Kevin Hart shares photographic evidence of himself towering over costar Dwayne Johnson. In the second, Johnson reveals that he gets around set a little differently from the rest of the cast. Finally, the third photo proves that three Karen Gillans are better than one as the actress poses next to her stunt doubles. Check out all three new Jumanji posts below!

RELATED: First Photo from the Set of the Jumanji Sequel!

The new Jumanji cast also includes Jack Black, Nick Jonas, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Alex Wolff and Morgan Turner. As we previously reported, it would appear that the Johnson, Gillan, Hart and Black are playing the “avatars” of the kids actually playing the Jumanji game in the film. Interestingly, though, Gillan refers to her character here as Martha, which is also the name the character was given when casting was first announced. Since then, however, it has been revealed that Gillan is playing an avatar named Ruby Roundhouse. Could Martha be the name of the girl playing as Ruby? It’s also worth nothing that Martha Shepherd was the name of the children’s mother in the first Jumanji.

Bad Teacher and Sex Tape helmer Jake Kasdan will direct from a screenplay by High Fidelity and Con Air scribe Scott Rosenberg with frequent Bad Robot executive producer Jeff Pinkner serving as a consultant. Matt Tolmach, William Teitler and Ted Field are producing. Mike Weber and Van Allsburg executive produce.

Jumanji is based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 1985 children’s book in which a magical board game causes jungle plants and creatures to invade a quiet American suburb. The 1995 original __film was directed by Joe Johnston and starred the late Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, Bradley Pierce, Jonathan Hyde, Bebe Neuwirth, David Alan Grier and Patricia Clarkson. According to Johnson, the new __film will serve as a sequel rather than a full reboot.

Jumanji hits the big screen July 28, 2017.

Nashville actor lands key Alita: Battle Angel role

The Hollywood Reporter says that Nashville and The Fosters star Keean Johnson has landed the highly-coveted Alita: Battle Angel role of the love interest for Rosa Salazar’s title character. Johnson will play Hugo, a young man who teaches Alita how to play a gladiator-style game called Motorball.

He joins a cast that also includes two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz as Doctor Dyson, Oscar nominee Jackie Earl Haley in an undisclosed role, and Ed Skrein as the villain cyborg Zapan.

Set in the 26th century, Alita: Battle Angel tells the story of Alita, an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by Dyson. The rebuilt Alita, remembering only her training in a deadly martial art, becomes a hunter-warrior, tracking down and eliminating vicious criminals. Within the context of an epic action-adventure, the __film aims to explore a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and finding love.

James Cameron had been developing the big screen adaptation for more than a decade, but now that he’s is in pre-production on four Avatar sequels, he has his hands a little full and has turned the Alita reins over to Sin City director Robert Rodriguez.

A Twentieth Century Fox production, Alita: Battle Angel will begin production in Austin next month. Cameron and Jon Landau will produce for Fox under their Lightstorm Entertainment banner.

Shoot Like a Girl Eyes Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is eyed to headline Shoot Like a Girl.

Angelina Jolie would play Air Force Major Mary Jennings Hegar in the biopic Shoot Like a Girl

Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie is, according to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, in talks to headline Shoot Like a Girl, a big screen adaptation of the upcoming memoir by Air Force Major Mary Jennings Hegar. Set to be published next spring under the full title “Shoot Like a Girl: One Woman’s Dramatic Fight in Afghanistan and on the Home Front,” the book is officially described as follows:

On June 29, 2009, Air National Guard major Mary Jennings “MJ” Hegar was shot down while on a Medevac mission on her third tour in Afghanistan. Despite being wounded, she fought the enemy and saved the lives of her crew and their patients. But soon she would face a new battle: to give women who serve on the front lines the credit they deserve…

After being commissioned into the U.S. Air Force, MJ Hegar was selected for pilot training by the Air National Guard, finished at the top of her class, then served three tours in Afghanistan, flying combat search-and-rescue missions, culminating in a harrowing rescue attempt that would earn MJ the Purple Heart as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor Device.

But it was on American soil that Hegar would embark on her greatest challenge—to eliminate the military’s Ground Combat Exclusion Policy, which kept female armed service members from officially serving in combat roles despite their long-standing record of doing so with honor.

In “Shoot Like a Girl,” MJ takes the reader on a dramatic journey through her military career: an inspiring, humorous, and thrilling true story of a brave, high-spirited, and unforgettable woman who has spent much of her life ready to sacrifice everything for her country, her fellow man, and her sense of justice.

Set up at TriStar, Shoot Like a Girl will feature an adapted screenplay by Frank Baldwin. Nicole Brown is set to oversee for TriStar alongside Hannah Minghella.

Jurassic World 2 Will be Scarier, Have More Animatronics

Jurassic World 2 Will be Scarier, Have More Animatronics

Jurassic World 2 will be scarier, have more animatronics

The upcoming Jurassic World 2 is set to begin production in Hawaii and London in February 2017, and Jurassic Outpost (via Collider) caught up with the sequel’s executive producer/co-writer Colin Trevorrow (who directed Jurassic World) to give us an idea of what to expect.

“It will be more suspenseful and scary,” said Trevorrow. “It’s just the way it’s designed; it’s the way the story plays out. I knew I wanted Bayona to direct it long before anyone ever heard that was a possibility, so the whole thing was just built around his skillset.”

It’s good to know that The Orphanage director J.A. Bayona will be applying some of his scarifying abilities to the new film. We’re also happy to report there will be much more in the way of animatronics, as seen in the original trilogy.

“There will be animatronics for sure,” Trevorrow confirmed. “We’ll follow the same general rule as all of the films in the franchise, which is the animatronic dinosaurs are best used when standing still or moving at the hips or the neck. They can’t run or perform complex physical actions, and anything beyond that you go to animation. The same rules applied in ‘Jurassic Park.’ I think the lack of animatronics in ‘Jurassic World’ had more to do with the physicality of the Indominus, the way the animal moved. It was very fast and fluid, it ran a lot, and needed to move its arms and legs and neck and tail all at once. It wasn’t a lumbering creature. We’ve written some opportunities for animatronics into [Jurassic World 2]—because it has to start at the script level—and I can definitely tell you that Bayona has the same priorities, he is all about going practical whenever possible.”

Finally, those expecting the Jurassic War envisioned by Vincent D’Onofrio’s character in the first one may be disappointed that’s not where the sequel is headed.

“I’m not that interested in militarized dinosaurs, at least not in practice,” Trevorrow remarked. “I liked it in theory as the pipe dream of a lunatic. When that idea was first presented to me as part of an earlier script it was something that the character that ended up being Owen was for, that he supported, something that he was actively doing even at the beginning. Derek and I, one of our first reactions was ‘No if anyone’s gonna militarize raptors that’s what the bad guy does, he’s insane.’”

In a final bit of news, fans will be happy to learn that Chris Pratt has received the script and can’t wait to work with Bryce Dallas Howard again.

Love you too Bryce! Just reading the script right now! So awesome! Round two baby!!! https://t.co/JF1Isv8kUS

2017 Oscar Predictions: Best Picture

Loving

Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton in “Loving”

With Sundance and Cannes behind us and the fall festivals in progress, the Oscar race is under way. Distributors are in full campaign mode for the 2016-17 awards season.

READ MORE: 2017 Oscar Predictions

After earning strong reviews, a standing ovation and the two top awards at the Sundance Film Festival, Nate Parker’s “The Birth of A Nation” was an early frontrunner for Best Picture. The Academy not only loves a well-told true story (see “Spotlight,” “Argo” and “12 Years A Slave”), but last year’s diversity controversy promised to shine an even greater light on “Nation” this year. The film will be released via Fox Searchlight, which has notched 13 Best Picture nominations in the past 12 years, more than any other company. They proved victorious with “Birdman” two years ago and were positioning “Nation” as their top contender this fall. But Parker is dogged by a college rape scandal that keeps coming up as he tries to promote his movie. Searchlight plowed ahead with a planned Toronto press junket ahead of an October 7th commercial release. But Oscar prospects are dim.

"The Birth of a Nation"

“The Birth of a Nation”

Fox Searchlight

Don’t count out one of the most popular and well-reviewed films of the year, Jon Favreau’s Rudyard Kipling adaptation “The Jungle Book” (Disney). Like Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,”  the family film could emerge as a strong contender with support from all the crafts.

Another strong candidate is Focus Features’ “Loving,” the heart-tugging Jeff Nichols drama that emerged from this year’s Cannes Film Festival. “Loving” is a well-told true story boasting two acting contenders (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga) that opens up discussions on America’s fraught relationship with race. “Loving” went to Toronto along with Focus Features’ well-received “A Monster Calls,” a four-hankie mother-son fantasy drama from Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (“The Impossible”) starring “Theory of Everything” nominee Felicity Jones, a Supporting Actress candidate.

"Manchester By The Sea"

“Manchester By The Sea”

The fall fests proved a crucible for a raft of other critics’ faves. Will Amazon Studios do better in the Oscar derby than rival Netflix did last year? They’re hoping so by adopting a more theatrically friendly approach to Kenneth Lonergan’s emotionally devastating Sundance drama “Manchester By the Sea” (Roadside Attractions), starring acting contenders Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams.

Telluride broke out Damien Chazelle’s audacious musical romance “La La Land,” starring Best Actress contender Emma Stone, as well as Barry Jenkins’ coming-of-age ensemble drama “Moonlight” (A24), featuring Supporting Actor hopeful Mahershala Ali (“House of Cards”). TFF launched Clint Eastwood’s airplane rescue drama “Sully,” starring well-reviewed Tom Hanks (Warner Bros.), and Denis Villeneuve’s brainy sci-fi thriller “Arrival” (Paramount), starring Telluride tributee and likely Best Actress contender Amy Adams, who also stars in Tom Ford’s Venice/TIFF entry “Nocturnal Animals,” which can’t hurt.

Also playing well in Toronto was Weinstein Co’s Oscar pick for this year, Garth Davis’s tearjerker “Lion,” starring Dev Patel in a true story about a man who lost his family when he was five years old and uses Google Earth to try and find them again. Mira Nair’s “Queen of Katwe” (Disney, September 30) also snagged strong reaction at TIFF, especially for Lupita Nyong’o as a fierce mother trying to help her chess-playing daughter escape the slums of Kampala.

New York Film Festival opened with Ava DuVernay’s well-reviewed, powerful documentary “13th,” and will debut Ang Lee’s Iraq war era “Billy Lynn’s Long Half Time Walk” as well as Mike Mills’ affectionate 1979 Santa Barbara family drama, “20th Century Women,” starring Annette Bening as a single mom raising her teen son in a boarding house.

Still to arrive on the scene are new films from award favorites such as Martin Scorsese (“Silence”), Warren Beatty (“Rules Don’t Apply”), Scott Rudin and Denzel Washington (“Fences”) and more, also likely to factor into the race.

Remember, in order to be frontrunner we have to seen the film.

It’s one of the most competitive Best Actress races in years.

“Birdman” nominee Emma Stone came out of Venice (winning Best Actress), Telluride and Toronto with raves for her role as a singer-dancer-actress in Damien Chazelle’s  TIFF audience-winner “La La Land.” Amy Adams also broke out at Telluride (which gave her a tribute packed with clips of her Oscar-nominated performances in “American Hustle,” “The Master,” “The Fighter,” “Doubt,” and “Junebug”) in sci-fi thriller “Arrival,” ably carrying her starring role as an empathetic linguist able to communicate with alien visitors. She also stars in a more glamorous vein in Tom Ford’s divisive “Nocturnal Animals.”

Breaking out at Venice and Toronto, where Fox Searchlight snapped it up for a December 9th release, was Pablo Larrain’s “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman as the grieving widow of John F. Kennedy in the aftermath of his killing. Critics raved.

This year’s likely breakout actress nominee is Ruth Negga. Not only is she tearing up the small screen as the badass Tulip in AMC’s “Preacher,” but her first major lead role on the big screen is a safe bet to earn her a Best Actress nomination. As Mildred Loving, Negga provides the film with its beating heart. Under the direction of Jeff Nichols, Negga delivers a low-key performance sans melodrama to deliver a refined portrayal of a woman battling race laws to live in peace with her husband and their children.

The Academy occasionally embraces foreign actors in its acting categories, which bodes well for Isabelle Huppert’s lauded performance in Paul Verhoeven’s taut mystery “Elle” (Sony Pictures Classics), which debuted well at Cannes. The veteran French actress pulls off one of the year’s most challenging characters— a rape victim who refuses to let her abuse define her — as she claims her identity as an entrepreneur, mother and sexually active older woman. Adding heat is another major performance in Mia Hansen-Love’s “Things to Come” (IFC).

Awards perennial Fox Searchlight released “A Bigger Splash” early in the year, but actors’ favorite Tilda Swinton could still sneak into the Best Actress race for her dazzling turn as a temporarily mute pop star wrangling her ex-husband and current lover during a Mediterranean vacation.

These actresses will be joined by a spate of potential contenders, including Oscar winners Marion Cotillard (“Allied”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Passengers”) and Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”), as well as past nominees who are overdue, such as Annette Bening (20th Century Women” and Viola Davis (“Fences”).

Remember, in order to be a frontrunner we need to have seen the film.

The CW Aims to Reboot Campy ’80s Soap ‘Dynasty’ With a Modern Story

Dynasty

The cast of “Dynasty”

Break out the mud (but get rid of the shoulder pads): The CW is prepping a new, modern remake of the classic primetime soap “Dynasty.”

Among the changes: In this version, Krystle (originally played by Linda Evans) is now Cristal, a Latina woman marrying into the Carrington clan.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are developing the new show, along with Sallie Patrick (“Revenge”). The husband-wife duo who originally created “Dynasty,” Esther Shapiro and Richard Shapiro, are also attached as executive producers.

The “modernized reboot” will still feature the gist of the 1980s original. Here’s the logline: “[Dynasty] follows two of America’s wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children. The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington — daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington — and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal — a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class. In an age where dynasties appear everywhere — from reality TV to the polling booths — this epic drama features the one percent in all its glitz and gloss, while exposing the dark underbelly: a corrupt world built on backroom deals, betrayal, and, in some cases, murder.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time that The CW has revisited a classic Aaron Spelling property. “90210,” the network’s revisit of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” ran for five seasons starting in 2008. That also led to a brief revival of “Melrose Place” in 2009.

“Dynasty,” of course, was a 1980s pop culture phenom, airing for nine seasons between 1981 and 1989. The sudser, ABC’s answer to CBS’ “Dallas” (which was also recently revived, on TNT), was the No. 1 __show in the United States during the 1984-1985 TV season.

Besides Evans, the original “Dynasty” starred John Forsythe, Joan Collins, Emma Samms, Diahann Carroll, Pamela Sue Martin, Heather Locklear and many others. The __show also spawned the spinoff “The Colbys,” and was later revisited via the 1991 miniseries “Dynasty: The Reunion.”

Should it go to series, the new “Dynasty” would also represent a reunion for Schwartz and Savage with The CW. The duo also produced “Gossip Girl,” “Hart of Dixie” and “The Carrie Diaries” at the network.

Schwartz’s and Savage’s Fake Empire label is producing with CBS TV Studios. Fake Empire exec Lis Rowinski will co-executive produce the series.

‘Swiss Army Man’ Clip: The Daniels Test Farting Corpse in ‘Motor-Butt’ Sequence – Watch

Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano in Swiss Army Man

“Swiss Army Man”

A24

Who would’ve thought that a film about a flatulent corpse would be so popular? The answer: Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, directors of “Swiss Army Man” starring Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano. After premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to positive reviews, the “Daniels” won the festival’s U.S. Directing Award. The film was then picked up by A24 and had a stellar theatrical run, garnering $4.2 million at the box office.

Now, “Swiss Army Man” is set to be released on Blu-ray, and IndieWire has an exclusive behind the scenes clip where the directors test out the farting corpse for the “motor-butt” scene. Check it out below.

For those unfamiliar with the picture’s plot, the story follows Hank (Dano), a man who is attempting suicide until he sees a corpse (portrayed by Radcliffe) wash ashore. He soon develops a friendship with the dead body and discovers that he can manipulate it like a multi-purpose tool.

“Swiss Army Man” is Kwan and Scheinert’s first film. The duo was previously known for directing music videos for Chromeo, Passion Pit and Foster the People, among others, as well as directing a handful of short films. Radcliffe was last seen in the drama “Imperium” and is working on the action/adventure film “Jungle.” Dano can next be seen in Joon-ho Bong’s “Okja.”

‘Among the Believers’ Featurette: Director Speaks Out About The Doc’s Alarming Controversy

Among The Believers

Courtesy of Among The Believers

When directors Hemal Trivedi and Mohammed Naqvi set out to make their documentary, “Among the Believers,” they wanted to examine the increasing political and religious turmoil in Pakistan since the War on Terror, focusing on the head of the Red Mosque, Maulana Abdul Aziz Ghazi. What they didn’t expect was a wave of controversy, death threats and even having the film banned in Pakistan. In a new featurette, exclusive to IndieWire, Naqvi and crew members speak out about the aftermath.

“I was scared. I was worried about my family, I was worried about myself. I was worried about my crew,” explains Naqvi after receiving death threats and going into hiding.

Per the synopsis, the film “follows Abdul Aziz Ghazi, an ISIS supporter and Taliban ally, who’s waging jihad against the Pakistani government with the aim of imposing Shariah law. His primary weapon is his expanding network of Islamic seminaries for children as young as four.”

The duo premiered their movie at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival and received accolades in various film festivals there after. Upon wanting to distribute and screen the doc across the world, their project received backlash from Pakistan for the way they depicted religious extremism and was ultimately banned in the country.

“It’s amazing to __show your work all over the world,” says Naqvi in the video. “But there’s a really big part of you, as an artist, as a Pakistani-Muslim artist, you don’t necessarily get that final validation until you share it with your own people and your own home.”

'Breaking Bad' star Aaron Paul explains why a Pearl Jam album had a profound effect on his childhood

Getty Images Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul has revealed that Pearl Jam's debut album 'Ten' had a profound effect on him when he first heard it as a 12-year-old.

Sharing a selfie of himself with Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder on Instagram, the actor told fans in a lengthy caption that 'Ten' came out on the day of his 12th birthday, and was the first album he ever owned.

The actor saved up loose change in an old sock to pay for the album, he recalled, and headed down to his local record store to buy it for himself as a birthday treat.

"I came home with my new birthday gift I had just bought myself and I was beaming," Paul wrote. "Could not wait to listen to it. I opened the door to my home and I could feel the silence in my bones. My house was empty. Now you need to know that I come from a very large family and to walk inside of our home with nobody there was extremely rare. I mean it was my birthday after all and nobody was home. I was alone. Where was everyone?"

After playing the album on loop "for hours and hours", Paul heard the phone ring and ran to answer it.

"I ran to pick it up hoping it was my mother singing happy birthday to me. It was my mother but she wasn't singing... She said...'Honey, we're at the hospital....' My heart sank and time stood still and all I could hear was Eddie singing in the background. My mother then explained to me that my sister had just given birth. She had given birth to a little girl the same day pearl jams first album came out. On my birthday."

"So many emotions went thru me on that day and this man was a huge part of that," Paul continued. "I love coming of age stories. Goonies, stand by me, wonder years. Kids just trying to figure it all out. I will never forget the end of that summer. The summer where I turned 12, listening to my first record, alone inside of my house, on my birthday, wondering where the hell everyone was."

The very first album I bought was Ten. Pearl Jams first album. I bought it with loose change I collected around the house and it was the only record I owned. Well at least until the Nevermind album came out one month later but that's besides the point. That month I will never forget. That was the one time I owned only one album and I cherished that damn thing. It was mine. It was my 12th birthday and I showed up to this small record store inside of our local mall with a sock full of change that I collected specifically to buy this album. I came home with my new birthday gift I had just bought myself and I was beaming. Could not wait to listen to it. I opened the door to my home and I could feel the silence in my bones. My house was empty. Now you need to know that I come from a very large family and to walk inside of our home with nobody there was extremely rare. I mean it was my birthday after all and nobody was home. I was alone. Where was everyone? So then of course I took advantage of the situation and put the record on and turned it up. For hours and hours just listening to this record over and over again. But where was everyone? Seriously. Eventually the house phone rang with this music blaring in the background and I ran to pick it up hoping it was my mother singing happy birthday to me. It was my mother but she wasn't singing... She said..."Honey, we're at the hospital".... My heart sank and time stood still and all I could hear was Eddie singing in the background. My mother then explained to me that my sister had just given birth. She had given birth to a little girl the same day pearl jams first album came out. On my birthday. So many emotions went thru me on that day and this man was a huge part of that. I love coming of age stories. Goonies, stand by me, wonder years. Kids just trying to figure it all out. 'Jurassic World' director explains how the sequel will be different

Press Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow has offered some hints as to how the eagerly-anticipated sequel will be different.

The sequel, which reportedly has the provisional title Ancient Futures, is due to start shooting early next year for a June 2018 release. Trevorrow will not be returning to the director's chair, but remains on board as both writer and executive producer.

Director of the award-winning 2012 movie The Impossible, Juan Antonio Bayona, replaces Trevorrow in the hot seat.

"It will be more suspenseful and scary," Trevorrow explained in an interview with a Jurassic Park fans' podcast. "It's just the way it's designed; it's the way the story plays out. I knew I wanted Bayona to direct it long before anyone ever heard that was a possibility, so the whole thing was just built around his skill set."

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are both reprising their roles from Jurassic World, but Trevorrow strongly hinted in his podcast interview that the dinosaurs-as-soldiers plot development from the latter stages of the 2015 movie will not be repeated.

"I'm not that interested in militarised dinosaurs, at least not in practice," he said. "I liked it in theory as the pipe dream of a lunatic. When that idea was first presented to me as part of an earlier script it was something that the character that ended up being [Chris Pratt's] Owen was for, that he supported, something that he was actively doing even at the beginning."

Trevorrow continued: "[My co-writer] Derek and I, one of our first reactions was ‘No, if anyone’s gonna militarise raptors, that's what the bad guy does, he’s insane.""

Watch a teaser trailer for the comeback series of 'Twin Peaks'

The clip features composer Angelo Badalamenti playing music from the show’s score, projected over a mysterious forest backdrop. A photo of the character Laura Palmer appears during the video. Watch it below.

In 2014, it was first announced that David Lynch's cult __show would return on Showtime. Earlier this year, it was reported that the revival series would be two seasons long.

The cast for the Twin Peaks reboot includes returning actors like Ray Wise, Miguel Ferrer, and David Duchovny.

New to the __show are musicians Trent Reznor, Sky Ferreira, Eddie Vedder and Sharon Van Etten.

Actors Michael Cera, Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried will also appear. Naomi Watts, Tom Sizemore, Laura Dern, Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Robert Knepper and Balthazar Getty are all rumoured to have been cast as new characters.

Later this month, the show’s co-creator Mark Frost will release a new book called The Secret History Of Twin Peaks. Actors from the program, including Kyle MacLachlan, Russ Tamblyn, and others, will voice the audiobook.

Showtime CEO David Nevins revealed earlier this year that the first half of the new episodes will debut in the "first half of 2017".

"I think it is quite possible we’re not going to do a traditional release pattern. I’ve had a couple conversations with David [Lynch]," Nevins said.

"But I want to embrace the unexpectedness of it, so I could definitely see longer episodes or in terms of this question of how do we release it linearly and how do we release it for people who want to stream it; maybe there’s something different between the two."

Adrienne Barbeau to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Barbeau

Beloved actress Adrienne Barbeau to receive Lifetime Achievement Award at the 14th annual New York City Horror __film Festival

She first found fame as the daughter of Bea Arthur in TV’s hit sitcom Maude and later, her ample bosom made her a ’70s pin-up Queen (with the unwelcome nickname Adrienne Barboobs). But actress Adrienne Barbeau became a true icon after starring in a series of horror and genre films, some of which were directed by her ex-husband John Carpenter (Escape From New York, The Fog). Later she would continue cementing her legacy in the macabre with solid work in George A. Romero’s Creepshow and Two Evil Eyes and Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing and many, many more.

Now, the 14th edition of the New York City Horror Film Festival aims to celebrate the career of Adrienne Barbeau this November by giving her the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She will be at the festival in person to accept her award on Saturday, November 12, after that evening’s program, at approximately 9:30 pm.

The 2016 New York City Horror Film Festival opens Thursday, November 10, with Darren Lynn Bousman’s Abattoir. At 7:00 pm. Jonathan Straiton’s Night of Something Strange continues the creepiness on Friday, November 11 at 9:30 pm, Steven DeGennaro’s Found Footage 3-D precedes Ms. Barbeau’s award ceremony at 5 pm on Saturday, Nov. 12, and Sunday’s final wrap-up feature is Caradog W. James’ Don’t Knock Twice, starring Javier Botet ([REC], Crimson Peak) at 6:45pm. The full festival runs Nov. 10–13, 2016, at the Cinépolis Chelsea Cinemas.

For the full schedule, festival information and ticket info go to the official NYCHFF site.

Netflix releases the trailer for The Ranch Part 2

The Ranch Part 2 is premiering with ten new episodes Friday, October 7, everywhere where Netflix is available. You can watch the trailer below!

The Ranch stars Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson, Sam Elliot, Debra Winger and more. The Ranch is executive produced by Don Reo (Two and Half Men, My Wife and Kids) and Jim Patterson (Two and a Half Men, Mike and Molly). Kutcher and Masterson also serve as executive producers.

Life on The Ranch is never easy and things get even more complicated in part two of season one. It seems like ex-football star Colt Bennett (Kutcher) has finally accepted his place on the family ranch, but he and his brother Rooster (Masterson) will have to prove themselves to their father Beau (Elliot) if they ever hope to become partners. Maggie (Winger) has hopes of her own and they may no longer involve her on-again/off-again husband and after finally saving his ranch, Beau might be losing his family. And if life weren’t complicated enough, when Colt’s high school sweetheart Abby (Elisha Cuthbert) expresses doubts about her fiancé, Colt must choose between his current girlfriend and his first love. Dysfunctional doesn’t even cover this family.

Hong Sang-Soo’s ‘Yourself And Yours’ Is A Delightfully Druken Riff On Abbas Kiarostami — NYFF Review

Hong Sang-soo

“Yourself and Yours”

For those familiar with the films of Hong Sang-soo, there’s really only one thing you need to know: The new one is pretty major, and not just because they drink beer this time instead of the usual soju. For those who haven’t yet been introduced to this singularly idiosyncratic Korean auteur, “Yourself and Yours” is as good a place to start as any.

But first, a quick primer: Hong Sang-soo movies have never been about what happens. Some of them are about what happened, some of them are about what could have happened, and — increasingly — some of them are about the difference between the two. Of course, the joke with Hong is that his movies are pretty much indistinguishable, these rueful, belligerently drunken comedies so similar that watching any two of them in succession is like doing one of those cartoon puzzles where you have to spot the minute differences between seemingly identical drawings. In the one on the left, a horny, self-destructive thirtysomething filmmaker as he goes to a bitterly cold town in rural Korea and gets shit-faced on soju with one or several local women (often either an old flame or a new fan). In the one on the right, the thirtysomething filmmaker is wearing a different winter hat.

Hong’s last film, the brilliant “Right Now, Wrong Then,” was such a helpful master key into his mind because it took that approach literally, resetting the story halfway through in order to run through it a second time and invite viewers to chart the minor deviations (and major ramifications). From “Blind Chance” to “Sliding Doors,” there have been any number of movies about how even the most innocuous decisions can ripple out from the fissures they cause in space-time, but Hong’s are so petulantly profound because they recognize how people fracture with every choice they make.

With no small amount of resentment and self-loathing, he leverages matters of the heart to obsessively explore how each path we take — and by “we,” I mean “boorish, destructive men” — is a direct negation of another. Or all others. His films, even the ones that ostensibly center on women, are consumed with the anxiety that choosing to be with one person is the same thing as choosing not to be with billions of others. That choosing who we are is a process of constant negation.

 Starring Kim Joo-hyuck, Lee Youyoung

“Yourself and Yours”

In “Yourself and Yours,” Hong cleverly turns that idea on its head, allowing the most playfully inexplicable of his narrative experiments to run with the idea that we can be more than one person at any given time. Kind of. Maybe. It’s hard to say. Set at the height of summer and scored to the jaunty muzak that Hong always uses to take the piss out of his self-involved characters, the film begins with an exasperated painter named Youngsoo (newcomer Kim Joo-hyuck) whose mother is on her deathbed.

Dropping by a friend’s house for a comforting chat, Youngsoo’s sadness over the imminent loss of a loved one is almost immediately sidelined by a rumor that his girlfriend, Minjung (Lee You-young) was recently spotted getting shit-faced in a local bar. Our bumbling hero is incensed — Minjung had promised him that she’d drink less, that she’d restrain herself to their agreed upon limit of five beers and two shots per night. He’ll dump her later that night.

Meanwhile, we meet Minjung — or someone who looks just like her — sitting in a coffee shop, and being chatted up by Jaeyoung (Kwon Hae-hyo), an overeager writer who swears that they’ve met before. She vehemently insists that he’s mistaken, and then drops a line of dialogue so knotty that we’ll spend the rest of the movie trying to untangle it: She tells him that she’s a twin. Hong doesn’t expect anyone to accept that information at face value (even Jaeyoung appears to be a bit skeptical), but even the suggestion of the fact that Minjung might have a doppelgänger is enough to knock reality off its axis, to twinge everything with uncertainty.

The woman sleeps with the writer and starts to date a small handful of other men, but all of them misconstrue her identity, and Youngsoo only seems to see Minjung in his daydreams. How many of her are there?

READ MORE: NYFF Adds Special U.S. Premiere of Pablo Larraín’s “Jackie”

“Yourself and Yours” isn’t a mystery so much as it is a bottomless rabbit hole — Hong borrowing the central gimmick of Buñuel’s “That Obscure Object of Desire” in order to make his own riff on Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy.” As always, he uses a lo-fi narrative device to complicate romantic entanglements so that they unfold on screen in the same jumble as they do in our own twisted minds, the filmmaker taking a kaleidoscopic approach in order to refract Minjung through a singularly male prism of neurosis and desire.

Youngsoo, Jaeyoung, and all of the other men in the movie see women as nothing more than the sum of their secrets — the moment Youngsoo thinks he can know everything about Minjung is the moment he starts to forget who she is. Hong’s films are crusted over with a warm layer of self-aware chauvinism, and this one in particular crackles with the admission that men have a tendency to reduce women in an attempt to understand them (in that sense, it almost feels like you could trace a direct line between Hong Sang-soo and Lars von Trier).

The fact that Hong is currently embroiled in a sordid affair of his own only makes “Yourself and Yours” feel that much more authentic in its fumbling towards any kind of peace. And while it lacks the resonance or dramatic heft of “Right Now, Wrong Then” or “The Day He Arrives,” it careens across one of the filmmaker’s sharpest scripts, and is nicked by several of his funniest lines (a climatic scene in which the tables turn on Minjung builds to a belly laugh worthy of “Toni Erdmann”).

But what most cements this as a essential chapter in the big book of Hong is how willing the film is to trip itself up and get turned around. Hong has always taken more pleasure in raising questions than providing answers, but “Yourself and Yours” is like watching the Minotaur get lost in his own maze — seldom have its director’s signature zooms felt like they were so sincerely looking for something. “Don’t try to know everything,” Minjung cautions, but Hong can’t help himself.

Grade: B+

Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast: Looking For ‘Hamilton’ With Filmmaker Alex Horowitz (Episode 7)

We are kicking off the 54th edition of the New York Film Festival with a behind the scenes look of the three big premieres.

Director Alex Horwitz had no clue “Hamilton” would become a cultural phenomena when he started filming his friend Lin-Manuel Miranda writing hip hop tracks (originally for a concept album, not a musical) for the founding fathers. Horwitz came by the podcast to explain how he was inspired by Al Pacino’s “Looking for Richard” and became fascinated by Miranda’s search for the man Alexander Hamilton. Following him around as he wrote in Aaron Burr’s real life bedroom and did research at Valley Forge, Horwitz explained that his goal was to capture history through Miranda’s perspective.

Head Programmer of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Dennis Lim, also dropped by this week to talk about the great Jacques Rivette and the discovery of the filmmaker’s three first short films, which will play at the festival. Lim breaks down how Rivette opened up cinema and pointed to the endless possibilities of the medium for filmmakers willing to experiment. Speaking of which, Lim, a co-curator of the Projections section, also highlighted a couple new filmmakers currently pushing the boundaries of film language.

And finally, we explain why the great Bertrand Tavernier’s “My Journey Through French Cinema” is the best three hour film school anyone could imagine and play a clip from a recent interview in which the filmmaker explains how Martin Scorsese inspired him to take on the four year endeavor of making a personal history of great French cinema.

How HBO’s ‘Westworld’ Shot on Film for a More Tactile, Organic Look

There was never any question that Jonathan Nolan was going to shoot the pilot for HBO’s “Westworld” on 35mm film. The funny thing is, Paul Cameron, the cinematographer (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”), didn’t realize it until he first approached Nolan with the same idea.

“Jonathan told me that had already made up his mind about film,” Cameron told IndieWire. “It made perfect sense for what we were going for, which was a very sophisticated, minimalist approach. We wanted the western town to feel classy and elegant.

“When they get off the train, it’s their decision to go deeper and darker as guests in the park. And then there’s this concept of the Westworld programming center: a 15-story building [patterned after L.A.’s Pacific Design Center] set on the side of Dead Horse Point [in Utah]. All of these pointed to grand scale.”

In the re-imagined “Westworld,” based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 movie about an adult theme park where guests can act out their wildest fantasies — a precursor to “Jurassic Park” — Nolan and co-creator Lisa Joy took a more graphic and philosophical approach to sex and violence.

Indeed, the “Westworld” series explores “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin,” according to the synopsis. And in these wild west adventures, the introduction of chaos alters the narrative for both guests and hosts.

Head programmer Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) alerts park founder Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) about strange incidents of aberrant behavior in some recently re-coded hosts that have been made more believably human. Meanwhile, the scripted narrative between a rancher’s daughter, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), and gunslinger Teddy (James Marsden) gets upended by the ruthless Man in Black (Ed Harris) — a twist on the Yul Brynner villain in the original movie.

Visually, “Westworld” displays sharp contrasts between light and dark and warmth and coldness, which cinematographer Cameron said was best achieved on film. He used the ARRICAM Lite package and picked a set of Arri Zeiss master prime lenses and had the coatings removed for a softer, more filmic look.

“There’s something tactile and formidable that’s very real,” Cameron said. “And when you get dailies the next day, even though they come back to you digitally, you’re seeing the results  of a much stronger medium. There’s also a level of control shooting on film that you don’t get digitally.”

The programming center was visualized as 30 floors, and Cameron said it was daunting to have endless floors that they could turn from behavioral and diagnostic centers to manufacturing floors all the way down to where robots are wheeled in shot and bloodied every night, and then farther down to the dark basement where they decommission the hosts.

The opening’s very striking: Lowe questions Dolores, sitting naked in mostly darkness, surrounded by circular neon lights, about strange nightmares. The camera pulls in for a melancholy closeup with a fly on her bruised face. Then we switch to her daily narrative, waking up to the splendor of her bucolic town, her memories wiped clean.

“When you’re there at the right time of day, on the right set with with the right actors and the right wardrobe, and you put film through the gate, it all comes together in very elegant way,” Cameron said.

“Westworld” premieres October 2 at 9 p.m. on HBO, HBO NOW and HBO Go.

‘Paterson’ Star Adam Driver Says He’s Unsure How People Will Respond to Jim Jarmusch’s Latest Film

Adam Driver didn’t have to think too hard about whether to accept the lead role in Jim Jarmusch’s lyrical drama “Paterson,” about a bus driver and poet with the same name as his hometown of Paterson, New Jersey. Driver was such a fan of Jarmusch’s movies that he decided to take the part even before reading the script or meeting with the writer-director, he told IndieWire earlier this month at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“Whatever he would have said, I would have said yes to,” Driver said, adding that he once drove an hour and a half to an arthouse theater in Indiana to see Jarmusch’s 2003 film, “Coffee and Cigarettes.” “In my mind, I said that even if I don’t like [the script], I’m going to do it. It was a bonus that I actually thought it was really beautiful,” he said.

Despite his enthusiasm for the project and the fact that critics have been raving about “Paterson” since its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Driver says he has no expectations about how the film will be received when it hits theaters in December, just in time for this year’s awards season. “I don’t know how people will respond to it,” he said, adding that he can never tell whether his films will be crowdpleasers or duds. “I have no idea what any of them are until they come out.”

"Paterson"

“Paterson”

In the case of “Paterson,” a quiet film that brings the audience inside the mind of Driver’s character while he’s writing poetry, one of the things that attracted him to the project was how Jarmusch wanted to tell a story without drama, conflict or action. “It seemed bold to me that Jim thought the power of thought was cinematic enough that people would be interested in watching that,” Driver said. “Also, the character’s main action in the movie was to listen. I loved that.”

While some actors might not have embraced a role with such little dialogue, Driver relished the opportunity to play a more passive character.

“That’s my favorite thing to do in movies — just listen and not have any lines, especially if you’re surrounded by really great actors like Golshifteh [Farahani] and Barry Shabaka Henley,” Driver said. “I could listen to that all day long.” In the film, Farahani plays Driver’s wife Laura, also the only person to read his poems, and Henley plays a bartender named Doc at a bar that Driver visits five nights a week for a single after-work beer.

Despite the lack of action in the movie, the role of Paterson required a considerable amount of preparation. Driver got his bus license after spending two months training in Queens and Manhattan with the same company that trains real bus drivers. “It just seemed to be a huge part of his character so I wanted to be comfortable doing it,” Driver said. “I feel like you can always tell when someone is in unfamiliar territory, pushing nobs when they don’t know what’s going on.”

While being able to drive and actual bus was an important for the part, the bus scenes were only a small part of the actual shoot. “I got to do it, but it was only for like one or two shots,” Driver said. “But it was worth it.”

“Paterson” will have its New York Film Film Festival premiere on Sunday, October 2.
