‘La La Land’ Deserves Your Respect: Why Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-Bound Musical Is A Dream Come True

Anyone who isn’t poised to win the Oscar for Best Director is certainly entitled to hate Damien Chazelle, and there’s not an openly fascistic executive order in the world that can stop them. But, as of late, the infuriatingly accomplished “La La Land” mastermind has been making it very difficult to do so. As if it weren’t frustrating enough that his sensational, stimulating new film is a quantum leap forward from the comparatively airless “Whiplash,” Chazelle further endeared himself to many by giving the rare awards __show acceptance speech that actually engendered a deeper appreciation for the honoree’s work.

Accepting the Best Picture prize from the New York Film Critics Circle, the mustached wunderkind pandered to the audience with the same crowd-pleasing cinephilia that’s been squeezed into every frame of his box office phenomenon. Instantly grabbing the room’s attention, his remarks began by name-checking legendary American filmmaker Frank Borzage, and then — at length, and in great detail — unpacking the plot of the influential auteur’s most famous melodrama.

1927’s “Seventh Heaven,” Chazelle reminded us, is a love story starring Charles Farrell as a soldier who dies in World War I, and Janet Gaynor as the widow who refuses to accept the fact that her husband is gone. Chazelle was seized by the spirit: “Her friends, her family tell her she’s crazy, stop dreaming, be realistic, get on with your life.” But she doesn’t, and the film rewards her magical thinking. Rather then end on a note of realistic despair, “Seventh Heaven” abruptly cuts back to the battlefield. “Charles Farrell is suddenly alive, inexplicably, and makes his way back home. The last scene, he comes home, they kiss, swell of music, fade to black.” From there, Chazelle enumerated the various possible explanations for such a fanciful finale, ultimately settling on the most cinematic of them all: Farrell’s character was both dead and alive, sustained in between this world and the next by an emotional force that overpowered the cruel dictums of time and space.

If you’ve seen Chazelle’s tinseltown opus — and of course you have then you can appreciate the broad parallels between the heart-stopping climax of “Seventh Heaven” and the similarly illogical sequence with which “La La Land” crescendoes to its a close. After nearly two hours of twirling around one another, Mia the aspiring actress (Emma Stone) and Sebastian the jazz obsessive (Ryan Gosling) seem to have disentangled and gone their separate ways. Five years have passed since the last time they saw each other, but a chance encounter at Sebastian’s jazz club — the dream that Mia once encouraged him to pursue — briefly knots them back together.

Their eyes meet, Sebastian sits at the piano so he can plunk out the bittersweet melody that has become their theme music, and suddenly we slip through a hyper-stylized wormhole that returns us to the start of the story and and dances us down the road not traveled. Mia and Sebastian’s affair is exhumed and idealized to the extreme, Chazelle reimagining their time together as a picture-perfect diorama of love in motion, and the effect could be thought of as Schrödinger’s romance — for those 10 glorious minutes, Mia and Sebastian are simultaneously both apart and together, in much the same way as Charles Farrell was both dead and alive.

It’s a bravura sequence, one that returns “La La Land” to its supposed genre while also completing the film’s freewheeling conversation with the form. But while the finale is clearly Chazelle’s pièce de résistance, the spire atop his shimmering monument to movie musicals, it would be a mistake to think of this epilogue as an ornamental touch. From the wry irony of the deceptively exuberant opening sequence (in which dozens of starry-eyed wannabes dazzle us with their dreams and then, as winter arrives in a city without seasons, promptly disappear into the ether) to the way in which Mia and Seb all but step into the screen after a sputtering projector abandons them halfway through “Rebel Without a Cause,” the entire film is engaged in a self-aware soft-shoe around the amorphous border between fantasy and reality.

The movies, Chazelle constantly reminds us, have always been the shared province of both fiction and truth — they’re dreams that we can have in the daytime — and their unique ability to reconcile those two contradictory dimensions is the very thing that allows the medium to see us as we really are. By using the most disruptively fantastical of genres as a way of underscoring the ways in which those forces can overlap and pull apart, Chazelle has made a film that sees us more clearly than we’re often able to see ourselves.

Often dismissed as an unfettered homage to the Technicolor musicals of the 1950s, “La La Land” eventually proves itself to be something far more nuanced and conflicted than that. A romance about movies that wilts into a movie about romance, the film hums with a sense of self-doubt that subverts its surface pleasures and steers its vision closer to the melancholy of “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” or the violent revisionism of “Dancer in the Dark” than it does the relative guilelessness of “Singin’ in the Rain.”

As Mia and Seb fall in love and grow apart, duet together and then become discordant, it grows increasingly clear that Chazelle isn’t just celebrating the spirit of Hollywood and all of the stars that shine above it, he’s also using their glow to try and illuminate why people struggle to live with the things they love. Chazelle’s film is a bravely uncertain and explicitly modern fantasia that isn’t afraid to ask if dreams and reality can ever co-exist as harmoniously as they do in the movies.

“La La Land” picks Mia and Seb out of a traffic jam as if honing in on the most basic people it can find, and Chazelle has the discipline to reduce his characters down to their most basic desires. Like just about everyone else in L.A., these young dreamers are not young enough; they’re beautiful enough to fit in but struggling to stand out. And like just about everyone else in L.A., they think the spotlight should shine on them, or at least they’re plagued by the fanciful idea that it could.

Mia is the less eccentric of the pair. In fact, she doesn’t have enough of a personality to be eccentric at all. She’s a type — that’s how the casting directors would think of her if they ever bothered to look up from their phones — bussed in from wherever and waiting for something to happen. But her eyes are as big as the Os in the Hollywood sign, and Chazelle has fun showing us how the world looks through them.

Seb is fucking insufferable. He’s also charming to the extreme. A petulant jazz obsessive whose job requires him to sit in the middle of a restaurant, plunk out holiday-themed piano muzak, and altogether disappear into the furniture, he’s the living personification of white noise, and he’d be intolerable if not for the tiny detail that he happens to be Ryan Gosling. More than anything, Seb feels like a self-deprecating riff on the man who wrote him.

Before it was transformed by its status as an Oscar frontrunner and inflated into a cultural touchstone big enough to fill the zeitgeist — before it became the only movie in history that managed to inspire reactions from the holy trinity of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Slavoj Žižek, and “Saturday Night Live” — “La La Land” was just a very personal story by a young, preternaturally successful filmmaker who wanted to explore his own place in the entertainment machine, and perhaps also his outsized affection for two musical forms that have given him more than he could ever give back in return.

Jazz is admittedly an uneasy vehicle for the ideas that the film wants to play with and poke around. Seb’s obsession is helpful in removing him from Mia’s world, but it ultimately does more to distract from the Hollywood setting than it does to flesh it out. But I doubt that Chazelle ever had much of a choice in the matter. Had the director grown up to be an obsessive fan of practical special effects, for example, perhaps Seb could have worshipped Ray Harryhausen’s paintbrush instead of Hoagie Carmichael’s stool. But that’s not who Chazelle is, that’s not what he cares about, and if he had been able to so easily disassociate himself from his personal predilections, “La La Land” could never have been such a genuine portrait of the difficulty with which we disentangle ourselves from our dreams.

None of this does anything to absolve that outstanding issues of representation that have come to dominate the chatter around the film. Even a most generous reading of “La La Land” can’t justify the optics of that shot where Mia is surrounded by a crowd of awed black onlookers. But Chazelle’s blind spots have a backhanded way of serving the specificity of his vision, for better worse. We don’t own the things that we love; more often than not, it’s the other way around.

Indeed, it’s reasonable to infer that Seb’s infatuation with jazz is at least partially motivated by the fact that it isn’t his to keep (or “save”). He was born at an arm’s length from it, separated from the source by time and race and a million hardships that he’s never had to experience for himself, and that’s a key part of its appeal. He’s not a purist so much as he is a romantic; he keeps the music in the past because that’s the only place where it can remain perfect. After all, the only thing that Seb’s love for jazz couldn’t survive is the thought that jazz might not love him back.

“La La Land”

The movie has engendered a lot of criticism for how it dramatizes Mia and Seb’s slow-motion breakup. In a genre where every emotion is performed for the people in the back row, the scene where Chazelle’s couple begins to pull apart is surprisingly opaque. It’s the first (and arguably only) conflict in their relationship, the first thing that complicates the staid and scrappy love story they’re telling themselves about two dreamers who believe in each other. It’s a mid-air collision between fantasy and reality, and it happens right at the moment when the giddiness of a mutual crush is settling into the routine of a serious relationship.

Mia goes to see Seb perform his first gig with the Messengers, and the concert begins with our jazz-loving male lead exactly where he pictures himself in his fantasies: Alone on stage with a spotlight haloed around him. But then the electric cheese-whizz music kicks in, the lights flare up, and Seb is revealed to be surrounded by a huge band of trumpeters, saxophonists, and background singers. The crowd goes wild, but Mia is crestfallen.

Other than the medley at the end, this is the most important scene in the film; not just because it sends the story spiraling into its second half, but because the song that the Messengers play is catchy as hell. Mileage will naturally vary on that score, but  “Start a Fire” is clearly not intended to be a satirical dig at whatever it is that Keith and his band are supposed to represent (John Legend was proud enough to perform it at the NBA All-Star Game, a choice that challenges the assumption that Chazelle intended for people to perceive the tune as chintzy garbage).

Film theorist and historian David Bordwell describes Keith as “Mostly a mouthpiece for a musical idiom,” and that’s accurate, but it doesn’t make the character a straw man. He’s an improviser, an artist, a musician who can listen to a song and take it where the world wants it to go — Keith is jazz as Seb reveres it, but not as he can accept it for himself.

“La La Land”

“How are you gonna be a revolutionary when you’re such a traditionalist?” he rhetorically asks Seb, posing a question that the movie will wrestle with for the rest of its running time and then leave us with as a souvenir. How do you make way for tomorrow when you’re so hung up on yesterday? How do you become someone else when you’re so anchored to who you were?

With “La La Land,” Chazelle has made the rare movie that isn’t afraid to shine a light into the infinite void between the strength of our emotions and the uncertainty of our choices. Watching the film’s wistful final moments, which make certain that Mia and Seb get everything they’ve ever wanted except each other, “La La Land” transports us to a uniquely cinematic place where time has a heartbeat and the people shine like stars, beaming down on us long after they’re gone. It knows that just because we’re not with someone doesn’t mean that they’re not with us. It knows that the only dreams we get to keep are the ones that don’t come true.

Comedy Central

Three episodes in and “Detroiters” is hitting its stride in the easy back-and-forth relationship of leads Tim and Sam. Played by Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson, the new Comedy Central series tracks a pair of friends who work together at a marketing company in Detroit.

While last week’s episode zeroed in on personal issues — with Sam and his struggle to find a significant other in the forefront — the upcoming episode “Deveroux Wigs” jumps back into the professional side of things. The episode centers on Tim and Sam trying to book an actor for a jingle, in which they’ll undoubtedly dig themselves deeper into whatever hole they find themselves in.

Asghar Farhadi Beams Into UTA’s #UnitedVoices Pre-Oscar Protest Rally in Beverly Hills (VIDEO)

United Voices rally outside UTA

Kate Erbland

Heavy-hitter Hollywood talent agency UTA eschewed its typical glitzy Oscar party in favor of a Friday afternoon event — billed as the United Voices rally — in front of their offices in Beverly Hills.  Members of the UTA family and other entertainment industry players joined together, they stated: “to express the creative community’s support for freedom of speech and artistic expression, and stand against policies of exclusion and division.”

The idea for the rally was sparked by the recent news that Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi — a UTA client — would likely be forced to skip the Oscars (where he is a nominee for his foreign-language contender “The Salesman”) due to the executive order travel ban that prohibited citizens from seven Muslim countries, including Iran, to enter the United States. Though the ban has been halted, Farhadi announced that he would still not attend the event.

In a video message from Tehran, Farhadi’s first public appearance since the ban, the filmmaker thanked the community for their support and solidarity during such a trying time.

“It is comforting to me to know that, at a time when some politicians are trying to promote hate by creating divisions between cultures and religions and nationalities, the cinema community has joined the people in a common __show of unity to announce its opposition,” Farhadi said.

You can watch Farhadi’s full remarks below.

Actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key opened the event with a powerful speech welcoming the large crowd — reportedly clocking in at well over 500 people — and reaffirming his dedication to standing by Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs. “This is America, where you get to believe what you want,” Key said to cheers.

Though the majority of the crowd was staunchly anti-Donald Trump, a handful of supporters of the president made their way through the crowd. Despite Key’s vocal support for their presence, two men holding a large Trump banner later lightly tussled with a pack of rally-goers.

In her remarks, filmmaker and actress Jodie Foster opted to accentuate the positive, laughingly opening her speech with a cheery cry of, “this is a great idea!”

Foster, who has typically shied away from using her celebrity to advance political aims, made it plain that these extraordinary times call for some very different measures. “I don’t do this very often, but this year is a different year, this is a singular time — it’s one to __show up, time to engage,” Foster said. “As the very dead Frederick Douglass once said, ‘any time is a good time for illumination.'”

She continued to an inspired crowd, “It’s time to show up, to resist, to show up and demand answers, to tell our elected officials to do their job. We will not tolerate chaos and ineptitude and war-mongering.”

Other speakers, including Wilmer Valderrama and Michael J. Fox, used their time on stage to reflect on their individual paths to American citizenship, reaffirming the need for America to keep up its proud tradition of welcoming citizens from well beyond the country’s borders. Both implored citizens to stand together and never back down from protecting their country and what makes it great.

The rally also included remarks from speakers not often associated with Hollywood, including California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, International Rescue Committee President & CEO David Miliband, and executive director at the ACLU of Southern California Hector Villagra, who issued perhaps the most passionate pleas of the day.

“The president build his campaign on fear-mongering and scapegoating,” Villagra said. “You know the list — Mexicans, Muslims, immigrants, women, transgender people. He attacked the media and even mocked a reporter with a disability. He told the nation that Muslims threatened our security, that the Muslims who are our neighbors and friends are to be feared, registered and watched. He said those Muslims outside the U.S. should be banned from entering. He told the nation that Latino immigrants are murderers and rapists and drug dealers.”

He added, “We are fighting now, and we will never back down.” The crowd went wild.

2017 Independent Spirit Awards: Who Will Win and Who Should Win — Critics Survey

witch fits moonlight toni erdmann

“The Witch,” ‘The Fits,” “Moonlight,” “Toni Erdmann”

The Independent Spirit Awards may not garner the same attention as the Oscars, but they offer a much broader survey of the previous year in film. There are some overlaps in major categories — the lauded trifecta of “Moonlight,” “La La Land” and “Manchester By the Sea” remains in place. However, there are also a number of other 2016 highlights, from “American Honey” to “Swiss Army Man,” that won’t make it to the Academy Awards. That gives us one last chance to cast a wider net. Per tradition, we reached out to our community of critics and journalists from publications around the country to ask them two questions for every category: Who will on Saturday — and who should?

READ MORE: 2017 Independent Spirit Awards Nominations

Among the 119 respondents, the majority felt pretty strongly that “Moonlight” deserved to win best feature, and confident that it would. The majority also supported the possibility of Barry Jenkins winning best director and showed the same degree of certainty that he would. That’s a notable contrast to the Oscars, where pundits (including our own Anne Thompson) are calling both of those categories for “La La Land.”

While Jenkins and Kenneth Lonergan are in different screenwriting categories at the Oscars — Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay, respectively — they’re competing at the Spirits for best screenplay, and 61% of voters think that Lonergan will take home the prize. However, just 35% think he should, with Jenkins nipping at his heels in this category, nabbing 33% of the vote.

There were some intriguing divisions in several categories that won’t surface at the Oscar ceremony, including Best First Feature. It’s here that nearly 50% of voters suggested that Robert Eggers’ slow-burn horror tale “The Witch” would take the prize, although some 30% saw potential for “The Fits,” Ana Rose Holmer’s abstract look at a young ballet team stricken with a mysterious illness. More notably, the movies actually tied in the “Should Win” category: 39% of the votes went to both films.

Other categories unique to the Spirit Awards include the John Cassavetes Award for films made for under $500,000. Competition was tight here: around 33% of our voters thought that So Yong Kim’s romance “Lovesong” deserved to win, a little more than Andrew Ahn’s Sundance drama “Spa Night.” However, 37% of voters felt that “Spa Night” should win, while only 29% felt the same way about “Lovesong.”

Ryan Murphy Says Don’t Take Him Literally; New ‘American Horror Story’ Won’t Feature Donald Trump

Ryan Murphy Publicists Awards Luncheon, Cocktail Reception, Los Angeles, USA - 24 Feb 2017

The new season of “American Horror Story” won’t be as political as we thought.

Creator Ryan Murphy made headlines last week when he told Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” host Andy Cohen that Season 7 would be about the recent presidential election. He even teased that Donald Trump might be a character.

But that’s not quite true, Murphy said on Friday. He told the audience at the Publicists Guild Awards Luncheon in Beverly Hills that he didn’t mean it literally.

READ MORE: ‘American Horror Story’ Election? Ryan Murphy Reveals New Theme for Season 7

“The themes of ‘American Horror Story’ have always been allegories,” he said, while accepting his award for Television Showmanship of the Year. “You will not see [Donald] Trump and [Hillary] Clinton as characters on the show.”

“Watch What Happens Live” is known for serving its guests plenty of booze, which Murphy blames for the slight misdirect. “They gave me three martinis in 20 minutes! That’s not good.”

Of course, on stage Friday at the Beverly Hilton, Murphy couldn’t help but make another joke, after “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” star Sarah Paulson handed him the award. As she stood nearby, he quipped, “Now as I look over at Sarah Paulson, I think of Kellyanne Conway. I don’t know! I might be rewriting!”

READ MORE: ‘American Horror Story’ Renewed for Two More Seasons at FX

Meanwhile, Murphy also took offense at a tweet that he saw from a “straight, white critic,” who wrote – in response to the original news – “Sometimes you just need to say no.”

Murphy said he considered it a message to FX CEO John Landgraf “that I apparently needed to be put in my place and quick. This is after not even a word of the season has been written. Was this a white wine spritzer after a hard day at the office reviewing ‘Big Little Lies’ tweet? Maybe. But later that week I had dinner with my friend Lena Dunham and we were talking about this tweet and we came to the conclusion that this idea of infantilizing, of ‘stay in your box,’ of not expressing yourself or what you’re interested in is something that gay people and women and people of color have to endure all the time in this world and this industry.”

Murphy said that exchange, as well as launching his new foundation (which aims to improve the number of women, gay people, people of color, and transgender people working behind the camera) has given him new focus. “[There are] a heartbreaking number of individuals who are struggling for recognition in our industry. And they are not being heard and they are not being utilized, and I want to in my life help them as much as I can… this is a new form of showmanship and this is the one that I want to embrace.”

Foreign-Language Oscar Nominees Make Joint Political Statement

Asghar Farhadi

Asghar Farhadi

In the 2017 Oscar race, politics have informed several Oscar categories, most notably Best Foreign Language Film.

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who won an Oscar in 2012 for “A Separation” and whose second Oscar-nominated film, “The Salesman” (Cohen Media), is playing on more than 65 screens and has passed the $1 million mark, grabbed a lot of press when he canceled his plans to attend the February 26th Oscars ceremony following Trump’s Muslim travel ban for visitors from seven countries, including Iran. (Farhadi’s full statement is here.) He is currently the favorite to win the Oscar.

READ MORE: Why Asghar Farhadi’s ‘The Salesman’ Should Win the Foreign Language Oscar — Consider This

Before and just after the Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon on February 6, Farhadi communicated with his four fellow foreign directors — Maren Ade of “Toni Erdmann,” Hannes Holm of “A Man Called Ove,” Martin Zandvliet of “Land of Mine” and Bentley Dean and Martin Butler of “Tanna.” They talked about how to make some kind of united response to the U.S. actions.

Here is their collective statement, released simultaneously with Farhadi’s beamed-in participation with a protest rally outside the United Talent Agency in Beverly Hills :

On behalf of all nominees, we would like to express our unanimous and emphatic disapproval of the climate of fanaticism and nationalism we see today in the U.S. and in so many other countries, in parts of the population and, most unfortunately of all, among leading politicians.

The fear generated by dividing us into genders, colors, religions and sexualities as a means to justify violence destroys the things that we depend on – not only as artists but as humans: the diversity of cultures, the chance to be enriched by something seemingly “foreign” and the belief that human encounters can change us for the better. These divisive walls prevent people from experiencing something simple but fundamental: from discovering that we are all not so different.

So we’ve asked ourselves: What can cinema do? Although we don`t want to overestimate the power of movies, we do believe that no other medium can offer such deep insight into other people’s circumstances and transform feelings of unfamiliarity into curiosity, empathy and compassion – even for those we have been told are our enemies.

Regardless of who wins the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film on Sunday, we refuse to think in terms of borders. We believe there is no best country, best gender, best religion or best color. We want this award to stand as a symbol of the unity between nations and the freedom of the arts.

Human rights are not something you have to apply for. They simply exist – for everybody. For this reason, we dedicate this award to all the people, artists, journalists and activists who are working to foster unity and understanding, and who uphold freedom of expression and human dignity – values whose protection is now more important than ever. By dedicating the Oscar to them, we wish to express to them our deep respect and solidarity.

—Martin Zandvliet (“Land of Mine,” Denmark), Hannes Holm (“A Man called Ove, Sweden), Asghar Farhadi (“The Salesman,”  Iran), Maren Ade (“Toni Erdmann,” Germany), Martin Butler, Bentley Dean (“Tanna,” Australia).

‘Collide’ Review: Despite Ben Kingsley At His Craziest, This Cut-Rate Car Chase Movie Crashes And Burns

collide movie nicholas hoult felicity jones

“Collide”

Sir Ben Kingsley has never been shy about hamming it up in low-rent garbage (check out 2015’s “Self / Less” to watch him dye his skin orange and play a bald-headed version of Trump), but his latest performance takes things to another level entirely. The kind of low-rent action movie that only exists because everybody involved knew that nobody in the Western world would ever see it, Eran Creevy’s “Collide” stars Nicholas Hoult as a reformed car thief and Felicity Jones as the dying girlfriend whose kidney failure inspires him to do one last job.

But they’re both really boring. You know who’s not boring? Geran, the Turkish drug kingpin who lives in a gold-plated trailer with four prostitutes, suffers from short-term memory loss, and likes to spend his free time watching the 1985 John Travolta classic, “Perfect” (that’s the one where Travolta goes undercover in a Los Angeles fitness club). Kingsley, who spends the whole movie hiding behind a pair of inarguably awesome blue-tinted sunglasses, brings the character to life with an accent that goes from 0-60 in less than three syllables, and it’s almost worth the price of admission just to hear him apply it to his climactic monologue about how hot Burt Reynolds was in “Deliverance.”

Very, very few actors could get away with this kind of performance. In fact, on an internationally funded production of this size, only a royally knighted Oscar winner could even attempt something so insane without causing the financiers to pull the plug. Enter Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Playing Hagen Kahl, a deceptively genteel businessman who smuggles golf balls filled with cocaine and is so generally sociopathic that it’s hard to imagine how he puts on his turquoise suit pants every morning, Hopkins goes toe-to-toe with Kingsley every step of the way (nevermind that the character, supposedly a criminal mastermind, can’t figure out that Geran obviously hired Hoult’s slack-jawed lead to steal from him).

Kahl doesn’t have an accent, but he shouts every third word just so you know he’s seen some really dark shit in his day. The master thespians only share two scenes together, but both of them manage to overcome some absurdly generic dialogue and blossom into absolute corkers. Remember the Pacino/De Niro restaurant scene from “Heat”? Imagine that, but nothing matters, the writing is terrible, and both characters are completely nuts.

If only they were on screen for more than a few minutes of this soulless dreck, then maybe “Collide” could have been something worth seeing. As it stands, Creevy’s film is every bit as forgettable as its title. Opening with some numbingly banal voiceover from Hoult that does a good job of setting the tone for what’s to come (“Reasons. We all have our reasons to do crazy, reckless things in life”), the movie races out of the gate with the credibility of a soap opera and the creativity of a car commercial.

Jones, leaning into playing a contemporary woman who isn’t burdened by having to save a galaxy or stay faithful to Stephen Hawking, manages to add some zest to her damsel in distress, even if she’s incapable of saving the laughable scene where she first falls ill (it involves her rolling around the snow in her underwear). Hoult isn’t quite so fortunate — spending most of the movie sitting behind the wheel of a sports car and staring blankly down the lens of the camera, the actor seems as depressed by the material as viewers will be. Watching him speed through the film’s European locations is a stultifying bore, especially because Creevy can’t seem to keep up with the action.

“Collide” is a bit more competent when it slows down, as it does for a mid-movie chase sequence through a rustic German village (brace for the obligatory light parkour), but the vehicular carnage is much too messy to justify destroying so many perfectly good cars. Never quite sure where to put his cameras, Creevy attempts to compensate by placing them everywhere, and cutting between them as if at random. He even manages to waste a chase sequence on the Autobahn, an unforgivable offense in the age of “The Fast and the Furious.” Now if only Vin Diesel could be convinced to cast Ben Kingsley and Anthony Hopkins as Charlize Theron’s two dads in “Furious 9,” then “Collide” might be worth something. Until then, this bargain-bin disaster deserves a one-way trip to the junkyard.

Grade: D+

“Collide” is now playing in theaters.

Three Dark Crowns: 20th Century Fox Plans Fantasy Adaptation

Get ready for a Three Dark Crowns movie!

20th Century Fox is developing a Three Dark Crowns movie

A feature __film based on author Kendare Blake‘s Three Dark Crowns is in the works, reports Variety. According to the trade, 20th Century Fox has picked up the feature __film rights to the 2016 novel as well as its three planned sequels. The property is being developed through Shawn Levy‘s 21 Laps. The banner is currently best known for producing the hit Netflix series Stranger Things as well as Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. The sci-fi hit is currently nominated for eight Academy Awards.

Published last September by HarperTeen, Three Dark Crowns is officially described as follows:

Three dark queens
are born in a glen,
sweet little triplets
will never be friends

Three dark sisters
all fair to be seen,
two to devour
and one to be Queen

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

The second book in the series, One Dark Throne, will be released this September.

Flarsky: Comedy Teams Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen Team

Flarsky will team Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron.

Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron will star together in a new comedy, Flarsky

Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron are teaming up for an original comedy project titled Flarsky, Deadline reports. The script, which arrives from The Interview‘s Dan Sterling, will see Rogen play a down-on-his-luck journalist who, in an effort to overcome his personal depression, decides to win the heart of his childhood crush. The crush in question is Theron’s character. While she was formerly the journalist’s babysitter, she has since risen to heights of success and is now one of the most powerful women on Earth. Jonathan Levine, who previously worked with Rogen on 50/50 and The Night Before, is set to helm.

Seth Rogen, who starred last year in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and who lent his voice to Sausage Party and Kung Fu Panda 3, can next be seen in The Disaster Artist, James Franco‘s look at the making of Tommy Wiseau‘s The Room. Charlize Theron, meanwhile, recently starred in The Huntsman: Winter’s War and The Last Face and lent her voice to LAIKA’s Kubo and the Two Strings. This summer, she’s headlining David Leitch’s action thriller Atomic Blonde and is going toe to toe with Vin Diesel in The Fate of the Furious.

A Point Grey, Denver & Delilah and Good Universe production, Flarsky will be produced by A.J. Dix, Evan Goldberg, Beth Kono, and James Weaver alongside Rogen and Theron. Sterling will serve as executive producer alongside Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane. Alex McAtee will be overseeing for Point Grey with Erin Westerman doing so for Good Universe.

Look for cameras to roll on Flarsky this August and check back for updates on the production as they become available.

The cast and filmmakers from Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, including Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Emma Thompson, Ian McKellen, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, director Bill Condon and composer Alan Menken, continued their way through Europe and attended a gala screening of the __film in London this evening. You can view photos from the Beauty and the Beast London event below!

Disney’s new Beauty and the Beast movie is a live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. Beauty and the Beast is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within.

Dario Argento, Barbara Magnolfi and Stefania Casini to appear together at Texas Frightmare Weekend to celebrate Suspiria’s 40th anniversary

Dallas Fort Worth’s internationally beloved horror expo Texas Frightmare Weekend  is returning once more on May 5, 6 and 7th at the Hyatt Regency and this year, they have one helluva treat for Italian horror movie fans.

Dario Argento’s surrealist 1977 horror landmark Suspiria turns 40 this year and to celebrate TFW is bringing Argento himself over from Rome along with actresses Barbara Magnolfi and Stefania Casini to make this a Suspiria reunion like no other.

Suspiria saw Argento at his peak, sculpting a stylish supernatural free-fall into blood, murder and femininity that was propelled by the paralyzing music of the band Goblin. The visionary __film was an international hit and kick started the wave of strong, ultra-violent Italian horror movies that favored style over narrative coherence that would bleed over well into the 1980s.Often imitated, there still is no other __film experience quite like it…though the movie is controversially being remade as we speak.

Texas Frightmare Weekend is presented in association with Blumhouse.com. True to its motto, “The Southwest’s Premier Horror Convention”, their goal is to provide fans with an unrivaled experience by celebrating all aspects of genre films. Texas Frightmare Weekend hosts celebrity appearances, autograph signings, screenings, exclusive parties and horror memorabilia vendors from all over the country. The event is also extremely proud to have featured the rising talents of many Texas “Frightmakers” in screenings, panel discussions and Q & A’s.

In 2012 the event moved to the Hyatt Regency inside the DFW to make room for its growing fan base. The new venue provides 93,000 square feet of event space (compared to the Grapevine Convention Center at 23,500 square feet) and 800 rooms.

To buy advance tickets to the event and to check out the rest of the amazing guest list go to the official TFW site.
