Sky Atlantic orders second series of 'Fortitude'

Fortitude is to return for a second series next year, Sky Atlantic has announced today (April 9).

The channel has ordered 10 new episodes of the chilly thriller, which is set in the fictional Arctic settlement of Fortitude. The show's creator Simon Donald will write "a brand new story" for series two, Sky Atlantic teased.

Donald said in a press release: "It's a privilege to return to Fortitude. It's a place where the real and the feared live side by side, where old dark secrets thaw out into the chill light of the arctic day. I'd never been anywhere like Fortitude before and I can't wait to go back."

Sky Atlantic's Zai Bennett added: "Simon Donald created a unique and unsettling story which, week after week, has captivated our customers. I am absolutely delighted that we will be bringing Fortitude back next year with a story that promises to engage, challenge and enthral us all over again."

Series one of Fortitude began on Sky Atlantic in January and the 11th and final episode is set to air tonight (April 9). Sky Atlantic said today that viewing figures to date make Fortitude its most popular original series yet. Series one's cast is led by Stanley Tucci, Christopher Eccleston, Michael Gambon, Sofie Gråbøl, Richard Dormer and Luke Treadaway. Casting for series two has yet to be confirmed.
